Dominican High School Girl Scores 1,000th Career Point

Dominican beats University School 72-39 Friday night.

Like cream, talent rises to the top.  The cream of Dominican High School’s talented crop of girl basketball players, junior Dilonna Johnson, scored her 1,000th career point during the WIAA Division 3 Sectional 4 Regional semi-final game in which she and her teammates defeated ninth-seeded 72-39 Friday night at Dominican.

Johnson and her classmate Deysha Smith-Jenkins each scored 19 points to lead the top-seeded Dominican in scoring.  Johnson sank a three-point shot and Smith-Jenkins popped in a jumper from five feet out for the first baskets of the game, and the Knights never fell behind.  USM junior Catie Downey drained a three-point shot to make it 5-3 and junior Alexis Lindsey put in a lay-up and two free throws to keep USM within range at 12-7, but that was as close as USM got.  Late in the first quarter Johnson drilled another three-pointer and then Smith-Jenkins put in 9 straight points and early in the second quarter and suddenly the Knights had an overwhelming 24-7 lead.

The Wildcats had difficulty against Dominican’s man-to-man full court press defense.  Freshman Kendall Youngblood was able to score two shots underneath. Senior Lauren Schweiters scored on a jumper and added a free throw and freshman Amber Baker canned 4 free throws for USM’s points.  But Johnson, Smith-Jenkins, kept scoring and Dominican senior Ellie Topp and sophomore Allya Watkins added a field goal apiece and Dominican led at halftime 40-18.

Baker scored on two three-point shots and two lay-ups to lead USM in the third quarter.  Lindsey also scored on a lay-up as USM added 12 points to its total in the third period.  But Dominican continued to dominate.  Johnson scored 5 points on a three-point shot and two free throws, freshman Brionna Simond scored 6 points, sophomore Mishayla Jones added 6 more and Dominican led 58-30 by the end of the third quarter.

Simond led the way for the Knights in the final quarter scoring 12 points.  Watkins had 4 points and Smith-Jenkins added 2 points.  Baker sank another three-point shot, Schwieters put in 2 free throws, Lindsey and junior Maddy Glaeser each had 1 point for the Wildcats in the quarter.

In the game Simond’s 17 points rivaled Johnson’s and Smith Jenkins’ totals for Dominican.  Watkins and Jones each scored 6 points; Topp had 3 points and junior Jojo Wycklendt had 2 points.  Baker led USM in scoring with 17 points; Lindsey had 8 points; Youngblood had 6 points; Schwieters scored 4 point; Downey scored 3 points and Glaeser scored 1 point.

The loss ended USM’s season.  The Wildcats finished with a 6-17 record.  Dominican now has a 23-0 record.  The Knights continue on in the state tournament playoffs.  They host the Milwaukee School of Languages in the Regional final at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 12th.
