Tough Friday Game for Girls Basketball Team Prelude to WIAA Tournament

Nicolet dropped a 38-35 decision to rival Whitefish Bay in a North Shore Conference game, but should still share the conference crown heading into difficult tournament bracket.

Nicolet might have to settle for a share of the North Shore Conference girls basketball crown this year after dropping a hard-fought game to an equally talented rival in Whitefish Bay, 38-35 on Friday.

Bay, Nicolet and Grafton all have 11-2 league records. Whitefish Bay's last game is Thursday against Homestead (3-10 conference). Grafton closes at Milwaukee Lutheran (1-12 conference) and Nicolet's last game is against Germantown (6-7 conference). All three teams will be heavily favored to win and complete the three-way tie.

Nicolet took a one-point lead entering the fourth quarter Friday, according to a report from JSOnline. The Blue Dukes went back on top and looked to be in control until Knights star Brittney Fair (22 points) nailed a 3-pointer with 35.3 seconds left, making it 36-35, Whitefish Bay.

The Blue Dukes made 2 of 4 free throws in the closing seconds, just enough to prevent Nicolet from completing a comeback.

Lyndsey Agnew scored 16 points and Maya Jonas 15 for Whitefish Bay.

Seeding meetings for the WIAA tournament are this weekend, and play begins March 6. In Division 1 the Knights, ranked No. 3 in the state coaches poll, are in a sectional with No. 7 Arrowhead, No. 9 Hamilton, No. 14 DePere and No. 15 Sheboygan North.

Whitefish Bay, ranked No. 7 in the state in Division 2, must navigate a sectional that includes No. 2-ranked and unbeaten New Berlin Eisenhower to get back to state. No. 10 Pewaukee also is in the sectional.
