In our final SportsEdge of the spring season, we're featuring the Best of the Edge in our "ultimate highlight." Our Lightning Round is a bit shorter, as sports are wrapping up, but we were on hand for Nicolet baseball, Whitefish Bay baseball and Lakeshore lacrosse.

The WIAA state track meet featured some outstanding performances from athletes tied to Patch communities. Prime among those was the effort of the rather easily. The most dominant individual athlete was . And Whitefish Bay's James Stecker was on winning relay teams in the 400 and 800, while taking sixth himself in the 100-meter dash.

The also featured many local representatives. The most successful singles players were Andrew Hwang (University School, Division 2 champion) and Jack Larsen (Whitefish Bay, Division 1 semifinalist).  In doubles, Brookfield Central's Andrew Denu and Kevin Schmidt lost in the Division 1 finals, 6-3, 6-2 to Connor Hildebrandt and Jake Humphreys of Kenosha Tremper.

THE WEEK AHEAD

The WIAA girls soccer tournament moves into the sectional round this week. The Sectional of Death has chewed up many of the area's top teams, leaving Grafton, Homestead, Cedarburg and Germantown, all from the North Shore Conference, in Sectional 7. Sectional 8 has seen top-seeded Whitefish Bay win two games by forfeit; the Blue Dukes host Milwaukee King on Thursday. Nicolet visits DSHA in the other semifinal, setting up the possibility of having four NSC teams playing Saturday for two available berths in the state finals.

In softball, Menomonee Falls was knocked out of the tournament by Oconomowoc 5-4 in eight innings on Tuesday, ending the Indians' amazing season at 19-2. Brookfield Central also lost, 9-0 to Homestead. Brookfield East was slated to play Germantown later on Tuesday.
