USM Girls Lacrosse Team Drops a Close One

Wildcats' offense went cold Thursday, forcing a loss at home against Brookfield.

The girls’ lacrosse team lost to the Brookfield Co-op 9-6 at USM on Thursday.

An injury early in the game to one of USM’s top scorers, Kelly Brethauer, hurt the Wildcats offensive output.

“We lost Kelly early in the game due to an injury and that hurt us offensively," head coach Sam Adey said. "I think it took us a bit to find our rhythm in the offense, and we just couldn't finish on our shots effectively.”  USM scored on only six of its 18 shots.

It remained a close game throughout thanks to USM’s defensive efforts. Adey attested, “Our defense played outstanding, and Ivy McKee had 12 saves.”

The game seesawed early. Brookfield’s Morgan Hollowell scored the first goal just 1:08 into the game.  USM’s Victoria Edmonds tied it just 46 seconds later.  Hollowell scored again at with 19:41 left in the half, and USM responded with a goal by Lauren Schwieters at 19:27.

Brookfield forged ahead on two goals to gain a lead it wouldn’t relinquish. Jordan High scored at 16:42 and Grace Barlow made it 4-2 with a goal at 14:10.

USM pulled within one on another goal by Schwieters at 12:47, but Hollowell kept Brookfield’s lead at two when she scored at 9:05.

Once again Schwieters pulled the Wildcats close with a goal just 22 seconds later.  But the Wildcats offense couldn’t get anything else in the first half.  Brookfield, however, scored two more in the first twenty-five minutes.  Diana Gulotta scored at 3:57; Erin Crain added another at 2:19, and Brookfield led 7-4 at halftime.

The second half was low scoring. Each team made two goals. Hollowell scored for Brookfield at 20:35 and Alexis Aghisan scored at 8:04 off an assist by Hollowell.  USM got another goal from Edmonds at 12:47 and another from Schwieters at 9:36.

Adey is looking forward to some practice time to regain some momentum and help USM improve upon its 1-3 record.  “Next week we have only one game, so I look forward to four full days of practice, something we haven't had since pre-season.”

Their next game is against Oconomowoc at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday at USM.
