USM Track and Field Struggles at Ed Dwyer Invite

Senior distance runner Ian Cooley brings in all the point for USM boys.

The track and field team took part in the Ed Dwyer Invitational hosted by Waukesha South High School Saturday.  Competing in an assemblage of teams dominated by Division 1 schools, USM placed 11th in the girls’ events and 12th in the boys’ events.

Wisconsin Lutheran won the girls meet with 162 points.  Kettle Moraine was second with 107 points and Waukesha South was third with 88.5 points.  Pius XI was fourth with 79 points; followed by Lake Geneva Badger with 56 points; New Berlin Eisenhower and Madison LaFollette with 40 points; Elkhorn with 36 points;; Messmer, the only other Division 2 school in the meet, with 20 points; and USM with 5 points.

Freshman Emily Waples gained 3 of USM points by finishing 6th in the Girls 440 Yard Run.  Waples ended the race with a time of 1:12.25.  Natalie Fischer of Kettle Moraine won the race with a time of 1:07.50.

USM gained its other points by finishing 7th in the in the girls 4 x 400 Relay race. Junior Nicole Flanary, Emily Waples, freshman Megan Waples, and junior Lindsay Nietzel finished with a time of 4:58.89.  Waukesha South’s team of Katy Allen, Natalie Gottschalk, Breslin Ponath, and Heather Litt finished first in the relay with a time of 4:32.00.

Flanary also finished 10th in the 220 Yard Dash.  The USM junior had a time of 30.81 seconds.  The winner of the race was Ambria Avery who ran the race in 28.90 seconds.

The boys meet was won by Waukesha South, which compiled a total of 124 points. Kettle Moraine took another second place in the meet with 96 points, and Arrowhead was third with 91 points.  The remainder of the field consisted of Wisconsin Lutheran with 80 points; Pius XI had 60.5 points; Messmer had 45 points; Greendale finished with 42 points; Elkhorn accumulated 40 points; Badger had 35 points; Mukwonago finished with 34.5 points; New Berlin Eisenhower had 9 points; and USM ended the day with 6 points.

Senior distance runner, Ian Cooley personally collected all of USM’s points in the boys meet. Cooley placed 5th in the 2 Mile Run, running the distance in 11:09.  The winner of the race was Garrett patterson of Greendale who finished with a time of 10:40.35.

Cooley took 7th place in the 1 Mile Run with a time of 5:01.99.  Steve Kelly of Arrowhead took first place honors by completing the race with a time of 4:50.96.

USM also finished 10th in the 4 x 240 Relay race.  Junior Adam Brostowicz, freshman Djdade Denson, sophomore Dan Taylor and senior Wil Gehl finished with a time of 4:21.13.  Elkhorn won the race.  Kyle Banta, Jose Estrada, James Jacques and Andrew Lockwood ran the race in 2:06.69.

USM will test its mettle against schools in Division 2 and Division 3 when it competes in the Midwest Classic Conference Indoor Meet against Brookfield Academy, Burlington Catholic Central, Dominican, Kenosha St. Joseph, Lake Country Lutheran, Living Word Lutheran, Martin Luther, Messmer, Racine Saint Catherine's, Saint John's NW Military Academy, Shoreland Lutheran, The HOPE School, The Prairie School, Wayland Academy, and Racine Lutheran.  The conference meet will take place at Carthage College in Kenosha beginning at 1:30 p.m. on April 5th.
