Wildcats Beat Blue Dukes in Girls Tennis Duel
Division 1 battles continue when they travel to Middleton for weekend tourney Friday at 5 p.m.
The girls’ tennis team defeated a Division 1 Whitefish Bay team 5-2 at Whitefish Bay.
USM’s Maddy Ecker, the reigning Division 2 singles champion, lost to Lilly Hayes 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, in No. 1 singles, but the other three USM singles players won their matches. Playing at No. 2 singles, Nicole Flanary defeated Bay’s Asia Butler by a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 score. USM’s Emily Chrobak also won. In the No. 3 singles Chrobak beat the Blue Duke’s Emily Debitz, 6-1,6-4. In the No. 4 singles contest, USM’s Hayley Gebhardt beat Allison Gregg 4-6, 6-0, 6-2.
The Wildcats also won two of three doubles matches against Whitefish Bay. USM’s Riley Kelly and Rebecca Buchanan had little trouble in the day’s No. 1 doubles match against Elena Ouimet and Jackie Comerford. The match score was 6-2, 6-1. In No. 2 doubles play Nicole Harris and Ellie Wigdale came back in the second set and went on to defeat Whitefish Bay’s Katherine Giesa and Emma Kovtabine, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2. The Blue Dukes managed to win the No. 3 doubles duel. In the match Whitefish Bay’s Sasha Barkhaus and Carly Theder beat Carly Black and Blake Gilespie, 6-3, 6-3.
The Wildcats will keep playing Division 1 foes when they travel to Middleton for a weekend tournament beginning Friday at 5 p.m.
