Wildcats Win Weekend Tennis Tournament

USM hosted two-day, Jim Laing Tournament in New Berlin.

The 2011 boys’ tennis team took home a win at the Jim Laing Tournament, hosted by USM Friday and Saturday, at the Moreland Tennis Club in New Berlin.

USM won the tournament with 36 points. Green Bay Notre Dame took second with 25 points. Madison Edgewood was third with 19 points, followed by The Prairie School and Brookfield Academy, which scored 16 points each; and Kohler and Greendale Martin Luther, which had seven points each.

“The kids had a great meet,” said USM head coach Russ Trimble.

One of the state’s top rated competitors, James Stark of Prairie School, beat USM’s Sam Walker in the no. 1 singles final by a 6-1, 6-1 score.  USM won the other three singles’ finals.  In a tight match second singles full of intensity, USM’s Rishi Karri rallied to defeat Chris Conley of Brookfield Academy 7-6 (7-5), and 2-6 (10-5).

In the no. 3 singles finals, USM’s Ty Parks took care of Notre Dame’s Matt Frisch 6-0, 6-2, and USM’s  Michael Lukas did not have a lot of trouble getting by The Prairie School’s Justin Sacian in the no. 4 singles final by a score of 6-0, 6-0.

USM also won the no. 1 doubles final.  Andrew Hwang and Brent Mackman combined to beat Tyler Piddington and Ben Winding of Madison Edgewood by a 6-3, 6-0 score.  Andrew Stewart and Topher McGee of USM made it to the final match of the number 2 doubles flight before succumbing to Connor Kosmuchi and Decian Bowman of Notre Dame 3-6, 7-6 (4) (10-4).  In the no. 3 doubles final, USM’s Tommy Camilleri and Ethan Ardern lost to Mark Cullen and Nate Calawerts of Notre Dame 6-3, 6-4.

The Wildcats plan to continue their successful ways when they host Brookfield Academy in a dual match on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
