Stritch to present bestselling author and bullying expert Barbara Coloroso

Cardinal Stritch University will present internationally bestselling author Barbara Coloroso on Thursday, Aug. 9 in a full-day workshop for teachers that will explore the issues of bullying, nonviolent conflict resolution and restorative justice, positive school climate, parenting, teaching, and school discipline.

"The Bully, the Bullied, and the Bystander: Breaking the Cycle of Violence" will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Stritch’s Sister Camille Kliebhan Conference Center. The event is sponsored by Cardinal Stritch University, Carroll University and the Nathan and Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center, a department of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation’s Coalition for Jewish Learning.

An evening workshop for parents and students will also take place at 7 p.m. Aug. 9 at Carroll University, 100 N. East Ave. in Waukesha.

The story of a bus monitor in upstate New York being bullied by a group of boys is only the most recent high profile example of a growing national problem, one that has intensified and grown beyond school grounds to social media, e-mail, and even the workplace. During the 2009–10 school year, 23 percent of public schools reported that bullying occurred among students on a daily or weekly basis, according to the federal report Indicators of School Crime and Safety 2011.

Coloroso is internationally recognized speaker and consultant on parenting, teaching, school discipline, positive school climate, bullying, grieving, nonviolent conflict resolution and restorative justice. She has appeared on Oprah, CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN and NPR and has been featured in the New York Times, Time, U.S. News & World Report, Newsweek, and other national and international publications. Her parenting and teaching strategies were developed through her years of training in sociology, special education, and philosophy, as well as field-tested through her experiences as a classroom teacher, laboratory school instructor, university instructor, seminar leader, volunteer in Rwanda, and mother of three grown children.

She is the author of four international bestsellers: “Kids Are Worth It!
