Beat the Heat: Fun Ideas to Stay Cool

Today is officially the first day of summer and with temps in the 90s, we've put together a few ideas for local places to go and things to do to stay cool until the temperatures drop Thursday.

It's the first day of summer today, but the pools have been full and beaches scattered with sunbaithers for the last few days as temperatures have hovered around 90 degrees. To help you stay cool, Fox Point-Bayside Patch is sharing ideas on a few other places to go and things to do. 

If you don't have air conditioning or good fans, find places to be cool, stay hydrated and and watch out for the most vulnerable — children, elderly and pets, officials say. recommends keeping an eye on elderly neighbors who may need a hand opening windows or getting a fan running.

Cool ideas 

Fox Point Pool: Cool off in the village pool, but be careful not to bake in the sun pool-side. 

The pool has open swim on the following days and times:

  • Monday through Thursday, 1 to 5 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
  • Friday, 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
  • Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Daily admission for Fox Point residents is $7.75 for adults, $5.75 for children ages 2-15 and free for children under age 2. Residents can also get an annual pass by filling out this form. 

Non-residents are only allowed entrance to the pool if they come with a resident. There are also a limited number of non-resident annual passes available. Those can be purchased using this form. 

Doctors Park: Any body of water is sure to be cooler than the air temperature. has public beach access here and plenty of cool water in Lake Michigan. Recently, the Milwaukee County Parks Department and repaired the path to the beach. 

Doctors Park Friends has also been fixing up the beach house, bathrooms and pulling invasive weeds. Check out the pictures !

Senior Center: Concerned about an elderly relative or neighbor who has no air conditioning? They are welcome to enjoy activities and meals at the  which is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Find scheduled events at the LX Club and many other places in Fox Point and Bayside in our Events Calendar. 

Village residents 60 and older are welcome and must pay an annual fee of $15. 

Marcus North Shore Cinema: The Marcus theater, 11700 N. Port Washington Rd. in Mequon, offers $2 popcorn and fountain drinks on Tuesdays.

Bayshore Town Center: An easy way to spend time in air-conditioning is to hit the mall.

Generations at Play: Want your kids to burn off some steam, but not get too toasty outside? Hit up where they have air conditioning and enough treats to last you all day. 

Restaurants and coffee shops: Take an extra long lunch or coffee (but avoid too much caffeine which is dehydrating) at area dining establishments. Again, Fox Point and Bayside have a ton of places, including these list of coffee shops and restaurants.
