2013 Citizen Police Academy –Fox Point, Bayside, and River Hills

The North Shore promotes civilian understanding and appreciation of the local police through Police academies which started in 2000. The current 2013 academy will complete on 6 June.

At the outset, I want to emphasize that the police officers are conducting this course on their own time as volunteers. Sgt. Gaynor of River Hills is the coordinator, Officer Adamaitis of Fox Point and Officer Miller of Bayside were instructors with featured assists from Chief Resnick. Investigator Wichman, and K9 Officer Emmerich.

The 2013 Police Academy is in full swing. After five of the eight sessions we have learned how officers are trained and hired, and how their skills are maintained. We have learned about investigation procedures, and investigated a staged murder scene.

We have toured the Bayside Police Department with its Communications/Dispatch Center, and seen a K9 in action against planted drugs.

We have viewed an officer’s personal and mobile facilities, and viewed traffic stops of various risks.

We have participated in small arms practice against targets, staged traffic stops, and staged domestic violence.

As a personal observation: I participated in the Fox Point Police Academy that Sgt Moroder (retired) initiated with Chief Czaja in 2000. It has been invaluable in helping understand what really happens in the news. Over the years that course has improved, and I was much further educated by attending this 2013 course as a photographer.
