Former University School Field Hockey Players Recieve National Honor

Two University School alumnae field hockey players receive academic honors.

Two former field hockey players have been named to the 2011 Gladiator by SGI / NFHCA Division III Collegiate National Academic Squad. The National Field Hockey Coaches Association placed Lauren Schroeder, who graduated from University School in 2010 and now plays field hockey at Bowdoin College, Brunswick, ME, and Camille Youngblood, who graduated from University School in 2011 and now plays for Amherst College, Amherst, MA, on the squad. The National Academic Squad recognizes those student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2011-12 academic year.

Schroeder and Youngblood both know what it takes to be successful. Schroeder was a captain of the USM field hockey team that won the state championship in 2009. She is a midfielder on the Bowdoin field hockey team, which competes in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). Bowdoin won the NCAA Division III field hockey championship in 2010 and made it to the semi-finals this past fall before losing to NESCAC rival, Middlebury. Youngblood captained USM in 2010 when it won the state championship again.  She now plays defense on the Amherst team, which also plays in the NESCAC conference.  Last fall Amherst made it to the NCAA DIII field hockey quarterfinals before losing to Middlebury.

The two USM alumnae have younger sisters who continue the family tradition of playing on a USM state championship field hockey team. Schroeder’s sister, Maggie, was a senior on USM’s 2011 state champion team. Youngblood’s sister, Kendall, was a sophomore on the USM team this past fall.
