Lakeshore Knocks USM from Unbeaten Ranks

University School boys lacrosse team lost to Lakeshore 9-4 Thursday.

The boys’ lacrosse team recorded its first loss of the season dropping a home game to the Lakeshore Club team 9-4 Thursday afternoon.

The Wildcats surrendered four unanswered goals in the first quarter. USM’s head lacrosse coach, Cameron Feist said, “Lakeshore came out fast and scored three quick goals, putting the boys on their heels, and we couldn’t recover.”

Lakeshore, which is a club lacrosse team made up of high school players from the Milwaukee North Shore suburbs, score three goals in the game’s first two minutes.  Anders Bjella powered the first past USM’s goalie David Mai just 12 seconds into the game.  He beat Mai again at 10:45. Lakeshore's Quinten Ziegler made it 3-0 with a goal at 10:22.

The USM defense pulled it together and did not concede another goal until the last 15 seconds of the quarter when Bjella fed the ball to Riley Liegel who in turn fired it past Mai.

USM finally notched a goal at 10:08 of the second quarter when Jeff Walters fired the ball past Lakeshore’s goalie Quinn Mooney. Bjella, off an assist from Dante Giacobassi, added another goal to Lakeshore’s total at 8:54.  USM’s Colby Wangman took a pass from Walters and scored the quarter’s final goal at 7:02.

It was 5-2 Lakeshore at halftime. The teams played even in the third quarter.  Lakeshore got the first two goals of the period, both by Bjella.  USM made it 7-3 at 5:59 when Walters scored another goal by taking a pass from Kenny Servis and gunning it in. Servis also had an assist on USM’s next goal.  He set up Zach Erickson for a goal-scoring shot at 4:37.

Bjella was too much for the USM defenders as he scored his seventh and eight goals of the game in the fourth quarter. He and his teammates prevented USM from scoring any in the period, and Lakeshore left with the win.

In the game Mai and Mooney both had 5 saves.

Feist reflected after the loss, “While this loss to a local rival was hard to take, I know the team is already re-focusing their energies on our next game against Mukwonago. We are still in a great position to make a run at the state Division 2 title.”

USM’s record is now 4-1.  The Wildcats take on Mukwonago at USM at 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
