USM Baseball Team Loses Close Game in Conference Opener

The University School baseball team lost to Lake Country Lutheran 3-1 Monday.

The University School baseball team lost to Lake Country Lutheran 3-1 in a Midwest Classic Conference game at USM Monday afternoon.

The Wildcats got good pitching performances from freshman David D’Ambrisi, sophomore Joey Pennington, and junior Greg Trinkl and they played well in the field.   The USM bats were quiet, however, and the Wildcats were only able to score one run.

“It’s tough to win with only two hits,” said USM’s head coach, Tim Bartz.  “We ran into a good pitcher; BJ Sabol was excellent, and Lake Country Lutheran was a good opponent today.  The next time we face them we’ll have to put the ball in play.  We did some nice things defensively, and our pitching held up.  Freshman David D’Ambrisi did a nice job in his first start.”

Lake Country Lutheran began the game with a single by Jacob Budnik, a double by Chris Kornowski, and a single by Sabol to score their first run.  They scored another on a double steal of second and home.  After that D’Ambrisi retired the next three batters with two strikeouts and a ground out.

USM answered with a run in the bottom of the first.  Jack Wells led off with a single.  He went to second on a ground out by Duncan Brown. Wells advanced to third on a ground out by Billy Lawton.  He then scored on a wild pitch.

The game then settled into a classic pitching duel as Sabol and the USM pitchers cut down opposing batters like they were scything wheat.

USM made two outstanding fielding plays in the top of the sixth to keep the game close.  With runners on first and third, USM’s third baseman Tripp Doheny fielded a bunt and threw a bullet to Brown who was catching to nail the runner at home.  Moments later, with a Lightning runner leading off third, Brown threw to Doheny to tag the runner, who had strayed far from the bag. The caught stealing gem ended the inning and the Lake Country threat.

Lake Country Lutheran eked out an unearned run in the top of the seventh and held the Wildcats off the board in the final frame.

USM is now 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference.  The Wildcats hope to obtain their first victory of the season when they travel to Brookfield Academy on Tuesday to play in a conference game beginning at 4:30 p.m.
