USM Girls Lacrosse Team Wins by Scoring 18 in Second Straight Game

The University School Girls Lacrosse Team defeated Waukesha 18-3 Thursday.

18 seems to be a good number for the University School girls lacrosse team.  After winning 18-1 over Oconomowoc Tuesday, the Wildcats returned to USM for their home opener and defeated Waukesha 18-3 on a cold, blustery Thursday evening near Lake Michigan.

“It was a great way to start the season this week,” commented USM’s head coach Samantha Adey. “We looked really good today. Our passes were sharp and accurate, and we moved the ball in transition and in our offensive third really well.  We found the open man on the attack and were able to finish on our shots.”

It didn’t take the Wildcats long to finish their first two shots.  They scored two goals in less than a minute to open the game.  Senior co-captain Kelly Brethauer fired in the first one at 24:50, and freshman Katherine Engman scored at 24:38 to quickly give USM a quick 2-0 lead.

USM scored four more times before Waukesha could get a score on the board.  Brethauer took a pass from senior Jessica Trinkl and scored at 20:22.  Engman scored her second goal at 16:31 and Brethauer scored again at 15:30.

Waukesha’s senior co-captain Esther Gies scored the Nighthawks first goal at 14:19. The Wildcats then proceeded to score seven more goals in the first half.  Junior Meredith Jeffers scored off a pass by Brethauer.  Sophomore Caroline Harper scored her first of the season.  Jeffers scored again.  Then Engman fed Brethauer a pass for a goal.  Senior Ali Robinson got into the act with a goal before Jeffers tallied her third, and sophomore Brooke Hopkins made it 12-1 with an assist by Engman.

USM added five more in the first seven minutes of the second half.  Brethauer scored twice, Engman and Trinkl scored once each, and sophomore Lauren Gogan scored her first of the season before Waukesha could score again.

Nighthawk senior Emma Nelton scored Waukesha’s second goal of the game at 13:22.  Soon thereafter USM’s Engman scored her fourth goal of the game for USM’s final tally, and then Waukesha’s junior co-captain Amy Leach finished the day’s at 3:22.

Adey added an additional note after the game. “We dominated the draw and ground balls, which shows a lot of tenacity and hustle in the midfield.”

She went on, “We look forward to a week of practice next week before resuming games the following week.”

Now 2-0, USM travels to Hartland on Wednesday, April 18th to play Arrowhead White at 5:00 p.m.  The Wildcats return to USM to host Kettle Moraine at 5:00 p.m. the following evening.
