USM Hoopsters Knock Off Wayland in Conference Game

University School beats Wayland in boys basketball game Tuesday.

The University School boys’ basketball team defeated Wayland Academy 51-42 in a Midwest Classic Conference North game at USM Tuesday night.

Neither team’s shooting was majestical, but USM’s tough defense and more patient offense helped the Wildcats build an early lead and then maintain it throughout the game.

Wayland had only 1 lead in the game. The Big Red went ahead 4-3 in the game’s opening minutes. A lay-up by USM’s Josh Baker, a short jumper and a three point shot by USM’s Julien Addison accompanying aggressive defense soon gave the Wildcats a 10-4 lead.

Wayland moved to within 4 points at 10-6 but another three pointer by Addison and three point drains by Greg Booth and Adam Salaymeh helped give USM a 16-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Two free throws each by Wayland’s Nick Ptaschinski moved the Big Red to within a point of USM at 16-15. The Wildcats did not allow Wayland any more points from the floor and only two more good free throws by Michael Vaubel in the half. Wildcats meanwhile methodically moved to a half time lead of 24-17 on six points by Djdade Denson and 2 more by Baker.

A jumper by Salaymeh, two lay-ups by Baker and another lay-up by Denson gave USM its largest lead of the game, 10 points, at 43-33. The teams traded scoring for the final few minutes, but the outcome was never in real doubt.

In the game Baker led all scorers with 21 points for USM. USM also got 11 points from Addison, 9 points from Denson 5 points each by Booth and Salaymeh and good defense by all players on the floor.
