USM Names New Track and Field Coach

University School has named Joe Eason as head track and field coach for 2013.

The University School Athletic Department is excited to announce the appointment of Joe Eason to the position of Head Track and Field Coach. Eason’s background includes a number of athletic and coaching experiences that will help him successfully oversee the school’s program.

Eason’s experience in competitive athletics started while attending Glidden-Ralston High School in Glidden, Iowa where he was a four sport athlete: cross country, basketball, track and field, and summer baseball. Eason ran a variety of distances in high school, specializing in the 200, 400, and 800 meter events.

After graduating from Central College in Pella, Iowa, Eason moved east to teach at Pennington School in Pennington, NJ. Eason coached track and field for five seasons at Pennington where, in spite of small numbers, he helped build some very competitive boys’ teams as well as Prep State and Conference Champion girls’ teams.

Eason brings extensive knowledge of University School to this position. As a member of the Upper School History Department Joe teaches World Civilizations, Western Civilization, and World Religions. He also served as a Class Chair and has recently accepted the position of Sophomore Humanities Team Leader. He also has served USM as an assistant Upper School track and field coach and as a Middle School track and field coach.

Goals Eason has set for himself in this position include encouraging students to bring the same commitment to excellence on the track and field team as they do in the classroom and to help student-athletes see track and field as a challenging team sport and as the foundation for a life long competitive activity. Eason reflects, “I hope to build commitment and enthusiasm for track and field at USM, to generate the expectation for team success and to have our student-athletes take pride in their work and accomplishments as a part of the team.”

Eason and his wife Jen are both active runners. They are the proud parents of three children, Sam and Maddie (4), who attend University School, and Dylan (2).
