USM Skiers Place High in Sunburst Giant Slalom

The University School ski team took part in a Midwest High School Ski conference Meet at Sunburst Sunday.

The ski team participated in a Midwest High School Ski Conference Giant Slalom meet Sunday at the Sunburst Ski Hill in Kewaskum.  The USM girls’ team finished second in the meet, which had five teams participating. The USM boys’ team finished fourth out of the five teams competing in the event.  USM had two individual second place finishers: Cassie Bence in the girls meet, and Spencer Haas in the boys meet.

Nicolet finished first in the girls meet with a total time of 190.16.  USM was second with a time of 199.53 followed by Whitefish Bay at 203.25, Franklin at 214.57, and Brookfield Central at 237.98.

Individually Ellie Sato of Whitefish Bay was the top finisher with a total time of 43.08 seconds for two runs through the Giant Slalom course at Sunburst.  Bence finished just 9 hundredths of a second behind Sato with a total time of 43.17.  Claire Kopetsky of Nicolet was third at 43.63. Nicolet’s Megan McMahon was fourth at 44.23 and USM’s Merrill Read placed fifth at 46.77.  Brooke Hopkins of USM was sixth at 47.42.

Other USM finishers were Michelle Bal, who finished 29th at 62.17; Katy Bjurstrom, who finished in 26th place at 67.75; and Morgan Bowen who finished 29th.

Nicolet also won the boys meet with a total time of 173.39.  Brookfield Central was second at 178.29; Whitefish Bay was third at 184.11.  USM was fourth at 186.31, and Franklin finished in fifth place at 197.97.

John Jaekels of Nicolet was the individual winner of the boys races with a total time of 40.89 for his two runs down the hill.  Haas was second for USM at 41.71 and Mike Noonan of Nicolet was third at 41.86.  Brookfield Central’s Jack Peeterson took fourth place with a time of 42.39 and Joe Tarnowski of Nicolet finished fifth at 43.47.

Other USM finishers were Charlie Hauske, who finished 12th at 47.54; Alex Tanner, who placed 16th at 48.51; Charlie Kies, who finished in 18th place at 48.55; John Roethle, who took 23rd place at 52.82 and Emmett Scovil who finished in 28th place.

The USM ski team competes again on Thursday.  The Wildcats will take part in a slalom meet at Alpine Valley in Elkhorn at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
