USM Tennis Team Wins Again

The University School boys tennis team won the Midwest Classic Conference Tournament Monday.

The tennis team won the Midwest Classic Conference Tournament on Monday at USM.

USM took first place in the tournament with 34 points.  Brookfield Academy second with 24 points.  The Prairie School was third with 22 points followed by Martin Luther with 13 points, Wayland with 10 points, Kenosha St. Joseph with nine points, St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy with nine points, Dominican with six points, and Racine St. Catherine’s with three points.  In the tournament’s bracket format, two points were awarded for a move to the right; one point was given for advancing to the left; and one point was given for a third place victory.

Wildcats were victors in three of the four singles brackets and in two of the doubles brackets.   In singles play, USM’s Andrew Chang struggled from behind but eventually won the first singles competition by beating James Stark in the finals, 3-6, 7-6(4), 10-4.  In the second singles final, USM’s Sam Walker had little trouble in defeating Zane Navratil of The Prairie School, 6-2, 6-2.  Rishi Karri won the third singles final by knocking off Bjorn Norderhaug of BA by a score of 6-3, 6-2.  Evan Scovil of USM lost the final match of the No. 4 singles to Justin Saeian of BA, 2-6, 2-6.

USM won the first doubles finals.  Tyler Parks and Brent Mackman teamed up to beat Jual Lara and Wichaya Pienchob of St. John’s, 6-1, 6-0.  USM’s Topher McGee and Andrew Stewart won the No. 2 doubles finals over Dylan Bissonette and Jack Eimerman of BA, 7-5, 6-4. 

With a large number of matches being played in a single afternoon, the No. 3 doubles finals were not completed before darkness descended.  USM’s Ethan Ardern and Adam Salaymeh will face Venkat Gainedi and Akhil Jayaprakash of The Prairie School in the No. 3 doubles final on Thursday.

USM has little time for laurels.  They have two matches against top state teams in two days.  The Wildcats play a dual match against Whitefish Bay, the state’s fifth-ranked team in Division 1, at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at USM.  Wednesday they head to Homestead for another dual match against the state’s third-ranked Division 1 team.
