Wildcat Football Team Wins Homecoming Game

University School defeated Dominican 46-8 in a football game Friday night.

The football team celebrated their 2011 Homecoming in grand style Friday night by defeating Dominican in a Midwest Classic Conference North contest 46-8.

Having lost their two previous games, the Wildcats were ready to roar - and they did just that - scoring 33 unanswered points in the first quarter. USM stopped Dominican's first drive in three plays then took over the ball after Dominican’s punt put them at the USM 40-yard line. Senior quarterback Tommy Pennington engineered a six-play drive that included a 14-yard run by freshman Michael Tucker, a 21-yard run by Pennington and a 19-yard pass from Pennington to senior Duke Butler. It culminated with a 3-yard touchdown run by Tucker and a successful extra point kick by Pennington to give USM a fast 7-0 lead.

Once again USM’s defense stopped Dominican in three plays including a sack of the Knights’ sophomore quarterback O’Shay Sathe by senior Alex Tanner.

Butler returned the ensuing punt 23 yards to the Dominican 21-yard line and scored in just four plays when Pennington raced across the goal line on a quarterback keeper and then kicked another extra point to give USM a 14 -0 lead at 6:08.

Pennington intercepted a pass by Sathe to styme Dominican’s next drive. He then helped USM scored in one play as he threw a 24-yard strike to senior Lane Stanford for the touchdown. His extra point try was good and it was 21-0 at 5:30 of the first quarter.

The USM defense came through once again on the first play of Dominican. Hayden Heun recovered a fumble o give USM the ball. After a quick drive, Pennington scored USM’s fourth touchdown on a 5-yard run. The extra point try was no good, but USM had a 27-0 with 3:50 remaining.

Dominican could not penetrate the USM defense on its next drive and turned the ball over on downs to the Wildcats at the Dominican 43-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage Pennington and Butler connected on a 53-yard touchdown pass at 1:02, and it was 33-0 after the extra point failed.

Dominican’s defense finally stopped the USM offense on the Wildcats’ first two drives in the second quarter. But Pennington and his teammates were still hungry, and they scored again when Pennington ran a keeper across from eight yards out.  He kicked the extra point to give USM a 40-point lead.

With the score 40-0 at the start of the second half, the clock was put on running time. That, and the fact that USM head coach Brian Sommers gave his less experienced players a chance to play, limited the scoring in the half. USM did get six more points when Nicky Hicks gobbles up a fumble in the end zone with 28 seconds left in the third quarter.

Dominican finally scored a touchdown at 5:18 of the fourth quarter. Sathe threw five successive completions to move to the USM 15-yard line and finished the drive with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Jason Brown. Sathe and Brown connected on the extra point to give Dominican two more points and a total of eight for the game.

In the game Pennington led the rushing with 107 yards gained. He also passed for 122 yards, completing six of 11 attempts. Tucker gained 64 yards on the ground, Toran Marks gained 41 yards running, and Hicks gained four yards for USM. Butler had two receptions for 76 yards, Tucker had two for 17 yards and Stanford had one for 24 yards. For Dominican, Sathe completed 17 of 42 for 152 yards through the air. Jack Jelacic had eight receptions for 68 yards and Brown had for for 43 yards.

Dominican is now 0-4 and 0-2 in the conference. USM is 2-2 overall, but the Wildcats are tied for the lead in the conference with a 2-0 mark. The Wildcats hope to maintain that conference dominance when they travel to Wisconsin Lutheran College to play The Hope School at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
