University School senior Andrew Hattersley competed in the WIAA Division 2 State Golf Tournament Monday and Tuesday.

golfer Andrew Hattersley placed 23rd in the WIAA Division 2 State Tournament held Monday and Tuesday at the University Ridge golf Course in Madison.

Gene Kiela III of Plymouth was the only D2 golfer to shoot below par for the two tournament rounds and won the tournament with a two under par 142.  Charlie Danielson of Osceola took second and Joe Martin, Brett Brusda and Matt Smilanich of Green Bay Notre Dame took third, fourth, and fifth place to lead Notre Dame to the team championship.

Hattersley was the lone Wildcat playing in the tournament.  The USM golf team as a whole placed fourth in the Sectional, but only the top two teams advanced.  However, Hattersley advanced to the state tournament as an individual qualifier by shooting a 78 and then winning a playoff in sectional play.

Hattersley stood tied for 14th place after the state tournament’s first round on Monday.  He shot an 81 on the par 72 course Monday.  In the relatively cool 7 a.m. air, Hattersley began Tuesday’s final round splendidly.  After bogeying the first hole, Hattersley shot an eagle three on the par five second hole.  But double bogeys on the par three fifth hole and the par five ninth hole hurt his score. Hattersley ended the round with an 84 for a two-day total of 165.
