Wildcats Capture Conference Golf Title Friday

The University School golf team secured the conference title with a victory in the fifth conference mini-meet Friday.

The golf team won the Midwest Classic Conference North’s fifth mini-meet  Friday on the golf course at St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy.  That victory gave USM the conference golf title for 2011.

The Wildcats won Friday’s mini-meet with 159 strokes compiled by its five golfers.  The second lowest total was achieved by Wayland Academy at 169.  Lake Country Lutheran placed third at 175 followed by Heritage Christian at 182, Living Word Lutheran at 184, Dominican at 192, St. John’s at 214 and Brookfield Academy at 241.

BA’s Daniel Romero topped the individuals with a total of 37 shots on the par 36 front nine of St. John’s course.  USM’s Noah Mandel and Wayland’s Michael Vaubel tied for second one stroke behind the leader at 38. The Wildcats’ Zach Hafeman carded the fourth best score.  He shot a 38.  USM’s Daniel Mandel and Lake Country Lutheran’s Aaron Sonderman tied for fifth place at 40.  USM’s Andrew Hattersley ended in ninth place with a  42, and Greg Booth shot a 46 to gain 20th place for the Wildcats.

USM ended the conference season in first place with wins in four mini-meets and the conference major tournament and a second place in one of the mini-meets. Wayland Academy was second,.  Lake Country Lutheran placed third followed by Heritage Christian in fourth, Living Word Lutheran in fifth, Dominican and BA tied in sixth place, and St. John’s in eighth place.

The conference’s top individuals for the season were determined by an average of each individual’s scores on the five mini-meets plus the front nine score and back nine score at the conference’s major meet.  Romero took first place for the conference season with an average of 37.67.  Sonderman was second at 39.67.  Daniel Mandel was third at 40.17.  Lee Grefe of Wayland was fourth at 40.67.  Hattersley was fifth at 41.33, and Hafeman was sixth at 41.50.  Noah Mandel was eighth at 42.50 and Booth was ninth at 42.83.

The averages determined all-conference selections.  The top five, Romero, Sonderman, Daniel Mandel, Grefe and Hattersley were named to first team all-conference. Hafeman, Vaubel, Noah Mandel, Booth, and Jack Murphy of Dominican were named to second team all-conference.

It’s state tournament time for the USM golfers.  The Wildcats will play in the Division 2 Regional sponsored by New Berlin West at the New Berlin Hills Golf Course in New Berlin on Wednesday, beginning at 9:45 a.m.
