Wildcats Capture Second Place in Nicolet's Sweet Sixteen Tennis Tournament

The University School boys tennis team took second place in the Sweet Sixteen Tournament Saturday.

The University School boys’ tennis team finished second in the annual Sweet Sixteen Invitational Tournament hosted by Nicolet High School Friday and Saturday.  Competing with a field of fifteen Division 1 schools, the Wildcats defeated Verona 5-2, Neenah 6-1, and Homestead 6-1 to reach the tournament finals.  The Wildcats lost to Marquette, the state’s top-ranked D1 team, 7-0.

USM’s head coach Russ Trimble said, “It ended up being a great weekend for tennis for us. We came up short against Marquette, but our players were competitive. They may have run out of gas and suffered a bit of an emotional let down after beating Homestead in the semi-finals. There were some definite highlights to the weekend. Michael Lucas played one of the best matches I have seen him play this year against Neenah's Ryan Risgaard. He just put it all together and didn't leave anything out on the court. Jack Collison was just a workhorse this tournament, playing against some of the top D1 talent out there and showing a lot of poise for a freshman. Jake Coran's match against Dan Wichman from Homestead was definitely his best performance. He came back from a first set blow out and from being down in the second set and put it all together to beat Wichman. Another freshman, Tom Calvy, won three out of four of his matches and really gained some experience in the process. Brent Mackman and Tommy Camilleri played their best doubles match of the year and defeated Homestead's Bodner and Apfelbach in three simply stunning sets. I have never seen them that pumped and affective. Spencer Haas and Joey Harris won three out of their four matches, with the best being against Homestead in three nail-biting sets.   Freshman Zach Schneck and Sophomore Andrew Buchanan clearly played their best tennis against Neenah's 3 doubles. They relentlessly kept coming to the net and put pressure on Neenah's team to make errors, and put shot after shot away. The loss to Marquette was tough, but second place for this young team in a big D1 tournament is a fine accomplishment.”
