Wildcats Down Dominican in Girls Volleyball

University School beat Dominican in a girls volleyball match Thursday.

In an exciting Midwestern Classic Conference North game Thursday night, the girls’ volleyball team defeated Dominican 3-0 at USM.

The first game stayed close throughout. There were frequent volleys as both teams kept the action going. USM took a slim lead early and slowly increased it to 16-11 and then 22-15. The Knights forged back, winning nine of the next 11 points and eventually tied the score at 24-24 as Dominican junior Elizabeth Mueller served five successfully. On a volley at 24-all, a Dominican shot went out past the Wildcats’ end line. USM Senior Claire Reardon coolly took the serve and with net help from senior Kelly Brethauer and sophomore Amber Baker won the next two points to give the Wildcats the 26-24 first game victory.

“The win in the first game was major,” said USM’s head coach Sue Baker.  It gave the Wildcats confidence against a tough team that had knocked them out in the regionals last year.

The second game was similarly close with some great volleys that showed some great passing and digs by both teams. The Knights had their only leads of the night in the second game. They pulled ahead at 7-4 but the Wildcats tied it at 10-10.  Dominican went back ahead at 14-10 but once again the Wildcats tied it back up at 15-15. The game stayed close after that. Neither team had more than a one point lead. With the game tied at 23-23, USM won a great volley to take a 24-23 lead and then Baker took the serve for the Wildcats and won the game-winning point to give USM a hard earned 25-23 win.

The Wildcats took control early in the third game. They pulled ahead at 12-5.  Dominican rallied and got within two points at 15-13. The Wildcats weren’t going to let this one get any closer, however and they surged at the end to take the game by a 25-17 score.

After the game coach Baker said, “Whew. Close one. We played well, the best we have done all season, but we let them back into the play too many times. It was nice to get revenge for the loss they gave us to end our season last year.”

In the game, Jojo Wycklendt led the Knights with 1O kills. USM’s Brethauer had 11 kills and Reardon had eight kills. Amber Baker had 15 digs, while Reardon had 12 digs and Guilia Ricci had 11 digs. Baker had 26 assists.

Dominican is now 4-4 overall and 1-1 in the conference. USM is 4-3 overall and 1-1 in conference.
