In the past three years USM and Notre Dame have been two of the strongest teams in Division 2 girls tennis.  In 2009 Notre Dame beat USM in the state tournament finals; then in 2010 Notre Dame beat USM in the state tournament semi-finals. The Wildcats got their revenge in 2011 as they won the state championship by defeating Notre Dame in the finals.

With that history as a backdrop, the encounter Saturday may have been a harbinger of what’s to come in this year’s state tournament.  USM won the early season bout by a 5-2 margin. Once again the Wildcats won three of the four singles matches.  Ecker continued to win in number 1 singles. She beat Notre Dame’s Meghan Linehan 6-1, 6-1. In 2 singles Pollack also emerged victorious, easily handling Hannah Smith of Notre Dame, 6-0, 6-0. Taylor also won her match for USM, dominating Meg Kczewinski 6-1, 6-0. Notre Dame won the 4 singles match. Caroline Schnapp beat Gebhardt 6-1, 6-3.

The Wildcats took two out of three doubles matches. Harris and Veitinger defeated Nicole Pott and Catherine Schanpp of Notre Dame 6-3, 6-4 in 1 doubles.  In 2 doubles, Short and Chrobak of USM snubbed Notre Dame’s Maddie Vandenhouten and Meg Vadenberg by a 7-5, 6-4 score. In 3 doubles, Anna Mckeough and Dara Worpinski of Notre Dame struggled but came back to defeat Black and Benard, 3-6, 6-4 (10-2).

USM plays its next match on Thursday.  The Wildcats continually face tough competition to prepare themselves for the Division 2 state tournament. They host one of the area’s top Division 1 teams, Divine Savior Holy Angels. Play gets underway at 4:00 p.m.
