Wildcats Sweep Brown Deer Sectional in Tennis

University School's girls tennis team won the Brown Deer Sectional of the WIAA Division 2 state tournament.

The girls tennis team swept every flight in the Brown Deer Sectional of the WIAA Division 2 state tournament Wednesday at the Pleasant Valley Tennis Club in Jackson. USM won the Sectional by a wide margin and will head to the sate tournament.

USM was first of 18 schools in the Sectional with 56 points. Its closest competitor was Racine St. Catherine’s, which compiled 39 points. Shorewood was third with 32 points; Kenosha St. Joseph was fourth with 25 points; and The Prairie School took fifth place with 23 points. No other school had more than eight points.

USM’s Maddy Ecker, the 2010 individual singles state champion, took first place in the Singles Flight 1. Nicole Flanary of USM won Singles Flight 2. Emily Chrobak won Singles Flight 3 for the Wildcats, and USM’s Hayley Gebhardt won Singles Flight 4.

In the Doubles competiton, USM’s Riley Kelly and Becca Buchanan won Flight 1.   Nicole Harris and Ellie Wigdale won Flight 2 for the Wildcats, and Blake Gillespie and Carly Black won Flight 3 for USM.

Once the other Sectionals around the state are completed, the individual pairings will be determined for the Individual State Tennis Tournament at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium at the UW-Madison on Thursday through Saturday.

By virtue of its victory, in the Brown Deer Sectional, USM will compete in the Team State Tennis Tournament at the same site on Friday and Saturday.
