Wildcats Sweep Doubleheader

The University SChool swept a doubleheader against Wayland Academy Saturday.

The University School baseball team swept a doubleheader from Wayland Academy in Midwest Classic Conference action Saturday at USM.

USM won the first game, 24-2 in five innings. Jake Watton limited the Big Red to just four hits while his teammates scored 24 runs on 11 hits and 16 walks. After his solid performance, Watton said, “I felt good out there today.  I had my fastball working, and I was able to kept them off stride.”

The start of the second game was pernicious for USM: the Wildcats trailed by a 9-6 score after just three innings. But Will Rosean wanted the ball and he came on to pitch three-and-two-thirds innings of scoreless relief, thereby quelling the Big Red’s early onslaught. Undaunted, the Wildcats soon rallied, scoring 15 runs in the game’s final three innings to defeat the Big Red, 22-9.

USM’s head coach Tim Bartz said, “I liked what I saw out there, especially in the second game. We had an early let down and we were trying too hard. I told the boys that baseball has to be played with controlled confidence rather than intensity. I told them if they kept cool and collected they could play good baseball. You get better when you play like that. Our stress level changed as we gained focus.  Our last three at bats were really good; they might have been the best of the season.  We were swinging hard at strikes and hitting fastballs with authority.”

In the opener, Wayland scored a run in the top of the first on a walk, a single, and a double steal, but the Wildcats answered with three runs in the bottom of the first as Wayland committed three errors and the Wildcats stole thee bases and had one hit.

USM exploded for 10 runs in the bottom of the second. Al ten scored after two were out. With one out, Joey Pennington walked.  Will Rosean took his place as a courtesy runner and promptly stole second.  Jerry Hamedi walked.  Then with two down, Duncan Brown walked to load the bases.  Billy Lawton walked to drive in one run.  John Schwieters singled to score Hamedi and Brown.  Nishad Agrawal walked to re-load the sacks with Wildcats.  Tripp Doheny reached on an error in right field that scored Lawton and Schwieters.  After a series of walks and wild pitches that made the score 10-1, Hamedi doubled to drive in two more runners and Brown singled to score Hamedi and give USM a 13-1 lead after two.

In the bottom of the third Agrawal tripled after Schwieters had walked.  Agrawal eventually scored on a bases loaded walk.  After an error and another walk, Jack Wells singled to score two more runs.  USM added one more on a ground out by Sam Lawton to make it 20-1.

The Wildcats added four more in the bottom of the fourth, but by then the game’s outcome was a foregone conclusion.

The start of the second game demonstrated that its outcome was certainly not a foregone conclusion.  The Wildcats began the game confidently with three runs in the top of the first.  Wells led off with a double to centerfield. He went to third on a wild pitch.  After Schwieters reached on a walk, Wells scored on a wild pitch, and Schwieters took second.  Lawton singled to drive in Schwieters. Lawton eventually made it to third and scored on Agrawal’s sacrifice bunt.

Wayland wasn’t ready to roll over, however, and the Big Red soon put a scare into the Wildcats by scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the first.  They took advantage of a single, a fielder’s choice, a bases loaded walk and two batters hit by pitches with the bases loaded to take the lead.

USM tied it with two runs in the top of the second.  David D’Ambrisi led off with a walk and stole second. Rosean sacrificed him to third with a bunt.  Wells dropped another bunt for a single to score D’Ambrisi.  Wells went to third on a throwing error on the play and soon scored on a wild pitch.

Wayland went back ahead 6-5 in the bottom of the second on a walk, a double, and another two walks.

Lawton led off the top of third with his fourth homerun of the week to tie the game at 6-6.

The Big Red added three runs in the bottom of the inning. After a lead off single, two walks, two errors, an a hit batsman they held command of the game with a 9-6 lead.

USM inched closer in the top of the fourth.  With one out, Joey Pennington reached on an error.  His courtesy runner, Heun, stole second, went to third on a single by Wells and scored on a groundout.

Rosean held the Wayland off the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning allowing his teammates to take the lead in their next at bat.  Billy Lawton led off with a solid single to center.  With one out, Lawton took second on a wild pitch.  Agrawal doubled Lawton in; then he stole third.  Miller singled to drive in Agrawal. Trinkl doubled to send Miller to third.  Rosean laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Miller and tie the game.  Wells singled to drive in Trinkl.

The Wildcats increased their lead by five in the next inning.  Brown led off.  He was hit by a pitch then stole second.  Lawton then doubled to drive in Brown.  Hamedi ran for Lawton and promptly stole third base.  Doheny singled to score Hamedi. Doheny took second on a passed ball, stole third and ran home safely on a throwing error on the play.  With one out Miller hit a fly ball over the left field fence for a homerun.  Trinkl then walked, went to second on a wild pitch and to third on a passed ball and scored on Wells’ line drive single up the middle.

The Wildcats continued their panoply of batting in the seventh.  Once again Brown led off with a single and stole second.  Lawton walked. Brown scored on Doheny’s single. Agrawal was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Miller then doubled and Trinkl then tripled to make the score 21-9.  A ground out scored Trinkl to give the Wildcats their final run and a conclusive ending to the doubleheader.

USM has won four of the last five games resulting in a 5-7 season record and a 4-4 record in the conference. The Wildcats hope to keep winning Monday when they face conference foe, Messmer, in a day-night doubleheader at McCarty-Zirkel Field in Milwaukee.  The first game is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
