Wildcats Sweep Their Own Weekend Invitational

the University School girls tennis easily won all five matches it played in the USM Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

The University School girls’ tennis team hosted an invitational on Friday and Saturday.  The Wildcats played against five other schools. The Wildcats lost only three individual matches during the two-day event. On Friday, USM beat both Appleton Xavier and Shorewood by identical 7-0 scores. On Saturday the Wildcats also beat Kohler 7-0.  They then beat Madison Edgewood 5-2 and finished the day with a 6-1 victory over Newman Catholic.

In the opening match against Xavier, USM’s Maddy Ecker coasted by Jessica Dickhut 6-1, 6-0 in 1 singles, while in 2 singles, Ali Pollack of USM continued her winning ways by besting Bridget Flaherty, 6-0, 6-0.

 In the 3 singles contest, Emily Chrobak took quick care of Xavier’s Katherine Pranica by a 6-0, 6-0 score and in 4 singles, USM’s Caroline Taylor handed Abby Wallace a 6-0, 6-0 defeat.

Meanwhile in 1 doubles, Taylor Benard and Nicole Harris beat Grace Flaherty and Marissa Walsh of Xavier 6-0, 6-4. In the 2 doubles match, Meredith Short and Julia Vietinger won for USM by defeating Alyssa Carrew and Megan du Bois 6-2, 6-0, and in 3 doubles, Carly Black and Haley Gebhardt handled Leah Szews and Meggie Christopher, 6-1, 6-0.

Later on Friday afternoon, USM proceeded to beat Shorewood, 7-0. In number 1 singles play, Maddy Ecker beat Shorewood’s Elana Lambert 6-1, 6-0. Ali Pollack sparkled in 2 singles as she whipped Grace Rybarik 6-0, 6-0. In 3 singles, Emily Chrobak had little trouble with Anjana Murali 6-0, 6-1 and in 4 singles, Caroline Taylor won for USM by beating Hayley Ostrowski 6-0, 6-1.

 In the doubles matches between USM and Shorewood, Julia Vietinger and Nicole Harris defeated Claudia Delana and Victoria Nelson 6-3, 6-2 in 1 doubles. In 2 doubles, Meredith Short and Taylor Benard knocked off Caroline Tweddell and Kirsten Repins of Shorewood 6-3, 6-1. In the 3 doubles match, Carly Black and Haley Gebhardt beat Tricia Nelson and Hannah Mentjes 6-1, 6-1.

The Wildcats continued winning when they resumed play on Saturday. In their first match against Kohler, USM won 7-0. In the 1 singles contest, Maddy Ecker beat Kohler’s Audia Hoffman 6-1, 6-3. USM’s Ali Pollack swept past Elly Gutschow like a street cleaner in the 2 singles match, 6-0, 6-0. In 3 singles, Emily Chrobak handled Kohler’s Leigh Schlecht by a 6-1, 6-0 score, and in 4 singles, Caroline Taylor clobbered Franny Hillstrom  6-0, 6-0.

 In the doubles matches against Kohler USM’s Taylor Benard and Nicole Harris beat Jess Dysterhouse and Sarah Leick 6-2, 6-2 in 1 doubles. Meredith Short and  Julia Vietinger of USM beat Shelby Homiston and Mari Marzano  6-0, 6-1 in 2 doubles, and in 3 doubles, Carly Black and Haley Gebhardt beat Katie Lindow and Sydney Yang by a 6-2, 6-2 score.

USM then played their Division 2 rival, Madison Edgewood, and beat the Crusaders 5-2.  Once again Maddy Ecker beat Sara Murphy 6-1, 6-0 in 1 singles, and in 2 singles, Ali Pollack shellacked Marieke Van Rybroek, 6-0, 6-0. In 3 singles, USM’s Emily Chrobak beat Jesse O'Brian, 6-4, 6-4. Caroline Taylor conquered the Crusaders Kate Zellmer by a 6-2, 6-2 margin.

USM’s Meredith Short and Julia Vietinger won the 2 double match, coming back after a tough first set loss to beat Marigore Carrey and Natalie Meicher 4-6, 7-5 (10-4) in 2 doubles.. USM lost the other two doubles matches against Edgewood. In 1 doubles, Taylor Benard and Nicole Harris lost to Edgewood’s Lauren Keller and Morgan Molitor  4-6, 6-7 (6-8) and in 3 doubles, USM’s Carly Black and Haley Gebhardt lost to Maggie Seibert and Martha Longley  4-6, 1-6.

The Wildcats concluded a long hot weekend of tennis, by beating Newman Catholic, 6-1.  USM won all four singles matches. In 1 singles, Maddy Ecker took care of Grace Larrain 6-2, 6-1. Ali Pollack thumped Carly Maves 6-0, 6-0. In 3 singles, Carloine Taylor beat Chloe Chapman 6-3, 6-3, and playing singles instead of her doubles as she usually does, Taylor Bernard beat Treva Etten in the 4 singles match 6-2, 6-2.

 USM won two of the three doubles matches.  In number 1 doubles, Emily Chrobak joined Nicole Harris in beating Madison Tubbs and Anna Gosz 6-2, 7-6(7-4). In 2 doubles, Meredith Short and Julia Veitinger defeated Abby Connolly and Toni Rufledt  6-4, 6-2.  USM’s only loss of the match was in 3 doubles.  In that contest, Carly Black and Haley Gebhardt lost to Lauren La Pree and Maddi Luefmer of Newman Catholic 2-6, 5-7.

USM continues to play tough opponents.  Next will be Whitefish Bay, which the Wildcats host in a dual match at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
