Wildcats' Track Coach and Athletes Learn From Olympian

University School track coach Deidre McCain and several USM athletes attended a clinic given by John Godina, winner of an Olympic Silver Medal and a Bronze Medal in the shot put.

Deidre McCain, a track coach at , had the privilege of learning her craft from an Olympian recently. On July 23, John Godina, a four-time World Champion in the Shot Put who won a Silver Medal in the 1996 Olympics and a Bronze Medal in the 2000 Olympics, hosted a Phase 1 Throws Clinic at Homestead High School. McCain, as well as Zach Steinbrenner, Neil Brethauer, and Dan Taylor, athletes whom McCain coaches in the shot put and discus on the USM track team, participated in the event.

Godina is the owner and head coach at the World Throws Center, a training facility in Phoenix, Arizona, that he established as a training home for throwers. It is quite possibly the only privately owned Olympic training center on earth. The shot put specialist, discus specialist, and strength specialist also holds various clinics at sites around the country to help local coaches and athletes like McCain and her student athletes.

McCain was excited by what she and the students learned. “He showed us shot put and discus techniques and drill progression. The boys improved on throwing the shot and the discus. They also got to try the javelin and the hammer, which we don’t throw in track and field meets in the Midwest. It was worth it.” As a result of her training, McCain was certified as a throwers’ coach. She is now able to coach throwers at Godina’s training facilities and camps.
