Wildcats Whip Heritage Christian in Girls Soccer Game

The University School girls soccer team defeated Heritage Christian 6-0 Wednesday.

The University School girls’ soccer team defeated Heritage Christian 6-0 in a Midwest Classic Conference game Wednesday at USM.

Playing on a day that only an Eskimo doing a rain dance might like, the Wildcats controlled the play throughout.  They outshot the Patriots 19-1 on their way to their first victory of the young season.

Reviewing the game, USM coach Jock Mutschler praised the efforts of the Wildcats’ offense.  He said, “The girls did an admirable job of possessing the ball, connecting on ten-yard passes, and then making penetrating passes down the flanks.  This allowed our speedy outside strikers to track down the through balls, turn the corner, drive the end line, and provide service to the center.  Amber Baker was a strong target in the center, distributing the ball diagonally to the corners for Kate Nosbusch and Marielle Bernacchi to run on to.  Our productivity was at its finest when one of the two wingers was close to Amber with the other stationed out on the opposite touch line.  After some combination play in the center, which drew in Heritage’s central defenders, Amber would spin the ball out wide, whereupon our speedsters received the ball, came off the edge, and created dangerous scoring opportunities. “

Mutschler continued, “I liked Catherine Jacobus’s composure in the back.  She played the ball out nicely, maintaining possession, and displayed supreme confidence.  The defenders, as a unit, made some nice linking passes across the field.  In the future, I would like to see us do even more of that, changing the point of attack, thereby opening up channels of space that our midfield unit can exploit.  Kat Schmidt was stellar, congesting the middle, destroying the Patriots’ plays before they fully developed and making serious contributions to our attack. “

It took the Wildcats awhile to overwhelm the Patriots’ tight defensive formation on the miserable afternoon.  Once they got going, however, they warmed to the task. They scored their first goal at 21:32. Julia Hanson gained control of the ball on the left side in the Heritage Christian end.  She moved down the line then passed it to Nosbusch at the top of the 18-yard box.  Nosbusch took a couple of steps then drove a shot into the Patriots’ net like she was parking a Mack truck there.

Hanson also began the play on USM’s second goal.  Once again she gained control of the ball on the left, and once again she made a nice pass into the center.  This time it went to Baker who took a touch and blasted a dynamite shot past Heritage Christian’s goalie, Jazmine Harris, at 24:19.

USM added four goals in the second half.  The Wildcats scored their third goal at 41:31 when Merrill Read sped down the left sideline and centered a pass to Schmidt at the top of the 18-yard box.  Schmidt moved around a defender and fired a shot up where your mom hides the Christmas presents for the goal.

Schmidt also scored USM’s next goal.  She intercepted a Heritage Christian clearing pass at the top of the box, moved in, and nailed her shot into the corner of the net at 53:32.

Mutschler tried some different players at new positions after that.  After a relatively quick adjustment, the Wildcats scored two late goals.  The first of these came at 74:53.  Playing aggressive midfield, Grace Florsheim out fought a Patriot defender for the ball on the left side then centered it to Read just outside the 18.  Read spun like a top, fired, and curled her shot into the net.

Florsheim’s efforts also led to USM’s final goal.  She got the ball and outran defenders down the sideline.  She centered it to Nora Lucey who one-timed a shot that hit the goalkeeper hard and ricocheted into the net at 78:10.

USM is now 1-1-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference.  The Wildcats’ next scheduled game is a conference game against Lake Country Lutheran on Wednesday, April 17th at 4:30 p.m. at Lake Country Lutheran in Hartland.
