Wildcats Whip Wayland in Soccer

The University School boys soccer team defeated Wayland Academy 4-0 Monday.

The boys’ soccer team remains undefeated in the Midwest Classic Conference North after beating Wayland Academy 4-0 Monday afternoon in Beaver Dam.

The Wildcats took lots of shots but only scored one goal until the final three minutes when they finally broke through and put three past the Big Red’s beleaguered senior goalie Ryan Hayes.

USM took the lead in the 15th minute. Sophomore Isaac Schlenker sent a pass to senior Josh Baker who lined the ball in near the left post.

For the remainder of the game USM kept at it, taking 24 shots, but they did not get another goal until the 77th minute. The Wildcats pounded the nail into the coffin when Schlenker sent a crossing pass to Baker who leaped and headed the ball past Hayes.

That opened the scoring door, and the Wildcats rushed in. Baker scored his third goal when he took another pass from Schlenker in midfield, raced into the Wayland penalty area, and blasted a shot into the open net vacated by Hayes as he came out in a vain attempt to stop the sprint by Baker.

Robbie Schmidt got into the USM scoring act in the game’s final minute. Schlenker sent him deep into the Wayland end with a pass. Schmidt turned and gunned a low-angle shot into the twine on the far side of the Wayland goal to give USM the 4-0 final score.

In the game Hayes made 10 saves while USM’s sophomore goalkeeper Jack Wells made three saves.

USM is now 7-1-2 overall and 4-0 in the conference. The Wildcats have another conference contest on Wednesday when they host Living Word Lutheran at 4:30 p.m.
