Wildcats Win Another Girls Lacrosse Contest

The University School girls lacrosse team beat Mukwonago 15-10 Monday.

The University School girls’ lacrosse team defeated Mukwonago 15-10 Monday afternoon at USM.

The Wildcats scored the game’s first five goals and led 9-2 with 6:15 of the first half.  They let Mukwonago close the scoring gap to three at 10-7, but then they pulled away to secure the victory.

USM’s head coach Samantha Adey said, “We didn't play our best game this season; I think we came out a little flat and weren't always executing our offense effectively. We had a bunch of unforced errors on attack that could have been avoided.  Defensively we had some issues with our body positioning in the first half, but it looked much better in the second half.  We are going to work on both of those things Tuesday and Wednesday to prepare ourselves for Thursday's Brookfield game.  I must say that we did dominate the draw, which is something we are always very focused on. We won 19 of the 27 draws.  Also, Meredith Jeffers had a great game with four goals, an assist, seven draw controls and four caused turnovers.”

Meredith Jeffers scored less than a minute into the game to give the Wildcats a lead they would never relinquish.

Elana Fishbaine cut through the middle like a shark through goldfish to make it 2-0 at 21:57, and Jeffers scored again just 56 seconds later off a brilliant pass from Meredith Short.

Katherine Engman saw the goal clearly at 20:20 and fired it in. Engman scored again on a long run down the side, a drive to the middle, and a laser shot past Mukwonago’s goalie, Ambryn Dittmer at 18:27.

Lindsay Manthei scored Mukwonago’s first goal at 13:28 but Engman negated its effect just 10 seconds later.

Both teams made several attempts at goals in the next several minutes without actual success until Molly Guiliani made the score 6-2 at 8:17.   Emily Bach’s quick shot into the upper corner of the Mukwonago net off a pass from Caroline Harper at 7:46 plus a speedy run off the draw for a goal by Engman in just 18 further seconds made it 8-2. Engman wound through the Mukwonago like side-winding rattler in the desert and fired in a shot to give USM a solid 9-2 lead at 6:39.  Caroline Harper added another for USM, so that at half the Wildcats led 10-5.

But the deficit didn’t totally deter the Mukwonago players and by the 22:00 mark of the second half they had drawn within three goals at 10-7.

The Wildcats scored the game’s next four goals to eliminate the threat.  Fishbaine notched a goal at 16:26 and just 22 seconds later Taylor Benard made a great full field run through the opposition to score. Fishbaine scored again at 15:04 and Jeffers scored two more, one at 10:17 and one at 6:10. to put icing on the USM victory cake.

USM is now 6-1.  The Wildcats play Brookfield at 5:00 p.m. at Wisconsin Hills Middle School in Brookfield.
