Wildcats Win Another Girls Lacrosse Game

The University School girls lacrosse team beat the Waukesha co-op team 17-8 Monday.

The University School girls’ lacrosse team defeated the co-op team from Waukesha West, Waukesha North, Waukesha South, and Waukesha Catholic Memorial, 17-8 Monday at USM.

Playing in a chilly rain, the Wildcats took control of the game early, forcing turnovers, beating their opponents to most of the ground balls, as well as maintaining ball control for significant portions of the game. USM took a 9-3 halftime lead then coasted to the eventual victory.

USM coach Samantha Adey said, “Elana Fishbaine had another big game with seven goals and five draw controls.  She and Katherine Engman have become quite a potent combo on the draws, with Katherine getting six draw controls.  Overall, we won the twenty of twenty-seven draws.  Meredith Jeffers also had a big game in midfield with four goals, and she caused six Waukesha turnovers.  One area that we will look to improve on is our shooting percentage.  We are getting great looks at the cage, but not converting on all our opportunities, I want us making smarter choices with our shot selections.

Fishbaine got things going for the Wildcats. Running like cheetah in an open savannah then cutting around defenders as closed in on the Waukesha net before unleashing vicious, pinpoint shots, she scored two goals in the opening four minutes of the contest. Waukesha’s Amy Leach made it 2-1 at 20:30. Fishbaine score twice and Engman scored once before Waukesha could get back on the board at 18:30.

The skies darkened, and the rains poured down. It took USM a while to score again.  Fishbaine added another goal at 14:49.  Jeffers made the score 7-2 with a goal at 10:27 and Engman tallied her second goal of the game at 9:10. Waukesha’s Michaela Hoffman added one at 8:50, but Fishbaine scored again with just 12 seconds left in the half to give USM a comfortable lead in the uncomfortable weather.

The teams traded goals in the early going in the second half.  By 15:16 Jeffers had added two goals, and Engman and Fishbaine had each scored another for the Wildcats.  Caroline Harper finally got into the scoring act by firing one home at 15:16 to give USM a commanding 15-6 lead.

Waukesha made it 15-7 at 8:13. Then within half a minute Jeffers scored and Emily Bach scored.  Harper scored her second goal at 3:37 off a nice feed by Brooke Hopkins to give USM a ten-goal lead that put the clock on running time.  Waukesha added one more goal late in the half, but it was too late to matter much, and the Wildcats had earned their third straight victory.

USM is now 3-0.  The Wildcats take on Arrowhead White in a home game at 5:00 p.m. Thursday.
