Wildcats Win Tennis Tournament

The University School boys tennis team won the Jim Laing Invitational tournament Saturday.

The University School boys’ tennis team opened its season by winning the Jim Laing Invitational Saturday at the Moorland Park Tennis Center. The Invitational was named after the former USM tennis coach, Jim Laing.

USM earned 31 points in the Invitational, eight more than the runner-up, Green Bay Notre Dame, which defeated USM in the finals of the Division 2 state tournament last year.

USM’s head coach Russ Trimble said, “The tournament turned out much better than I thought it would due to all the bad weather, nagging injuries, ACT tests, and lack of match play to help us determine our lineup. But it was a great opportunity for the guys to have some competitive matches under pressure and see where their games are at this point in time. We were missing some of our players because of injuries and the ACT tests, so our freshman got to fill in.  They had some very impressive results. Robin Engel at two singles and Jake Coran at three singles played great and won their flights. Zach Schneck and Jack Collison filled in at 1 doubles for Brent Mackman and Tommy Camilleri, who had to take ACT tests on Saturday. They played a great match against Brookfield Academy winning 6-4, 6-3 for third place. In three doubles freshman Tommy (Lloyd) Calvy teamed up with senior co-captain Spencer Haas. They sailed through their flight to end up winners. It’s been tough so far this season. We really need a break on the weather, which doesn't look encouraging for this next week, to get some good practice time in.”
