Blood Drive Will Be Held Sunday

The blood drive is the vision of Rabbi Zevi Silver, who recently needed a blood transfusion as part of his battle with testicular cancer.

Rabbi Zevi Silver was fortunate enough to receive a blood transfusion when he needed it, and now his family is organizing a blood drive to help others that may need blood in the future.

Zevi, 31, first learned he had testicular cancer when he was 19. He pursued agressive treatments and went into remission for seven years. Then the cancer returned, and he was required to receive a blood transfusion, which gave him energy to visit with the ones he loves.

Zevi was so thankful for the blood transfusion that he asked his aunt Evelyn Greenberger to organize a blood drive for other patients.

"As he turned to me, I asked if there was anything I could do for him. As his aunt, I wanted to help, but felt empty as to what I could offer him considering his news," she said. "He turned to me and said that he would like to have the largest blood drive possible."

Since that date, Greenberger, a Temple Menorah member, has been organizing 'Zevi Gives Back.'

The event will be held in partnership with the BloodCenter of Wisconsin on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Peltz Center of Jewish Life, 2233 W. Mequon Road, Mequon.

Greenberger hopes to see more than 200 donors and collect at least 150 bags of blood.
