MADISON – Another day, another Wisconsin law enforcement officer in legal trouble.

Brian Thomson was a La Crosse police lieutenant before resigning Tuesday after his arrest on misconduct and drug charges, according to the La Crosse Tribune.

That follows recent reports of:

— Two Madison police officers retiring early after internal investigations resulted in a litany of misconduct allegations against them

— A former Wisconsin Rapids police lieutenant’s apparent suicide after being arrested in connection with a child sex scandal

— And a former Mount Horeb police lieutenant pleading not guilty to sexually assaulting a 14-year-old boy

Regardless of the outcome of the cases — early retirement, no official charges, guilty or not-guilty pleas — Wisconsin taxpayers will be on the hook for years to come for the public officials’ Wisconsin Retirement System benefits.
