Question of the day: Should you have to have a 'smart' meter?

MADISON – We’ve received a lot of comments about the interesting case of Audrey Parker.

The 81-year-old Baraboo woman took a stand, and it cost her a vital service.

After this great-grandmother’s lengthy refusal to allow the Baraboo water utility to install a smart meter at her home, the city shut off Parker’s water this week.

“I’ll get by without it,” Parker told Wisconsin Reporter, noting that she grew up on a farm without running water.

“They’ve been heavy handed. They’re not acting like public officials, they’re acting like totalitarians. I don’t like to be threatened. I’m not going to buckle.”

Her neighbors, Jim and Darcy Sheriff, feel the same way. They got the same treatment.

The city turned off the Sheriffs’ water on Tuesday but later relented, pending an investigation.
