Raw milk saga ends with a fine and no jail time

MADISON – The saga of dairy farmer and raw milk provider Vernon Hershberger came to an apparent end Thursday as Judge Guy Reynolds levied a $1,000 fine and no jail time or probation for the Loganville farmer. Hershberger was also ordered to pay $513 in court fees.

Perhaps it’s fitting, however, the dairy farmer will spend the rest of Dairy Month continuing to milk cows on the farm with his wife and 10 children rather than behind bars.

Hershberger faced up to a year in jail and a $10,000 fine for violating a Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection holding order on the raw milk and other food in the pantry from which he served members of his farm cooperative or cow-share.
