Ryan, Kind team up to keep government spying

MADISON – A bipartisan pair of Wisconsin congressmen helped defeat an amendment that would have stopped the National Security Agency’s blanket collection of telephone records from millions of Americans and foreigners.
The House killed the measure, 205-217.

Rep. James Sensenbrenner, the Wisconsin congressman who drafted the PATRIOT Act, voted to stop funding the NSA’s massive phone records surveillance program Wednesday. All but two Wisconsin congressmen joined Sensenbrenner in voting to defund the program, stopping the NSA from collecting phone and email data from Americans who are not under investigation for specific crimes.
But Rep. Paul Ryan, the Wisconsin congressman and former Republican vice presidential candidate who campaigned on independence from government and personal liberty, voted against defunding the program.
