Best-Paying Summer Jobs

A list of eight best-paying summer jobs. Provided by Jobs at AOL.

The following story was provided by AOLJobs.com  By David Schepp Getting a summer job is a rite of passage for many young people. In addition to earning wages to help pay for tuition or make car payments, it's where many first-time employees learn the fundamentals of work -- showing up on time, teamwork, communicating effectively, managing workloads and more. But summer jobs can also be fun, giving teenagers an opportunity to bond and hang out with a group of people beyond their schools and neighborhoods. In recent years, because of the recession and subsequent slow recovery in the labor market, summer jobs have been hard to come by for many teenagers. This year, many economic indicators point to an improved job market, suggesting that …

Basketball Tournament to Benefit JCC Swim Instructor

Two 12-year-old boys have organized the daylong tournament to raise money for their former coach Bob Aker, who was recently diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease.

Youth sports coach Bob Aker always supported Josh Glazer and Adam Sadoff during swim practices and basketball games at the Jewish Community Center. Now that Aker has been diagnosed with ALS – or Lou Gehrig's disase – the 12-year-old Mequon boys want to be there for their former coach and give him emotional and financial support.  That's why the two Lake Shore Middle School students decided to organize a three-on-three basketball tournament this weekend called Buckets for Bob. Through sponsorships and registration fees, the boys are hoping to raise money for Aker's family and the ALS Association of Wisconsin. "When I was younger, Bob would always help me with swimming. He would always push me to try my hardest," Adam said. "Because he …

Local Coyotes Call Bayside Home

Local experts weigh in on respecting the coyote in the Village of Bayside.

In the Village of Bayside, coyotes have always had a negative connotation. From eyeing citizens at night to attacking small dogs, one can see why coyotes might not have the same appeal majestic appeal as say deer. However, some local experts said there should be no need to fear coyotes.   Bayside Police Captain Scott McConnell has dealt with coyotes since he started working at the village 27 years ago. Within the ranks of the police department, he considers himself the “coyote person.” Over McConnell’s career at the police department, he has educated residents about coyotes such as telling residents not to leave their pets out overnight or even to leave steaks on the grill after a big cookout. Even with the aid of education, the initial …

Gwen Moore Appears on The Colbert Report

The "openly black" congresswoman talked politics and pretended to ride motorcycles with the comedic talk show host Wednesday night.

U.S. Rep. Gwen Moore is the latest politician to take a political risk and appear on The Colbert Report with comedian Stephen Colbert. If you're not familiar with the show, Colbert takes on the role of an exaggerated right-wing talk show host. In his "Better Know a District" segment, he has poked fun at about 80 U.S. representatives, with the ambitious goal of reaching all 435 congressional districts. Moore represents Wisconsin's 4th Congressional District, which recently expanded to include Shorewood, Whitefish Bay, Fox Point, Glendale and Bayside. On last night's show, Colbert asked Moore to expand on her thoughts about Rep. Paul Ryan's budget, which she has said favors the rich. Moore said America should be more akin to a family, in …

Friends who work at the House say Moore is one of a few House Members that are laughed at. She is BEYOND incompetent and has not clue what she is doing most of time. I think it is HILARIOUS that the people of Shorewood allow her to represent them. Is there not ANY other flaming libtard that could take her place (not that I am endorsing someone who might actually DO something; I am fine with her …   more ›

Retiring at 50: Could You Follow This Woman's Extreme Savings Plan?

Here's the story of Marlene Konkoly, who found creative ways to spend less and save more so she can retire at 50. This story is the first in our series about Extreme Savers.

Americans may be living longer, but our retirement plans aren’t keeping up. Which means people are living longer with smaller bank accounts. But Marlene Konkoly will retire at age 50. How did she do it? She contributes a whopping 45 percent of the gross annual income she earns as a procurement officer for an automotive finance company to her retirement — all while owning a home and remaining debt-free. Konkoly is actually well ahead of the retirement savings curve compared to many of her fellow Americans. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, fewer than half of Americans even know how much money they would need to retire. And nearly a third of employees who had access to a defined contribution plan such as a 401(k) did not participate…

THIS INSPIRING STORY BROUGHT TO YOU BY GRAPE-NUTS

Sam Llanas — Formerly of the BoDeans — Now Focuses on Bullying, Suicide Prevention

Former lead singer for popular Waukesha-based band is facing a new challenge in his life: a solo career and writing the score for a play about alcoholism, bullying and suicide.

About this sponsorship: In honor of the 60th anniversary of Sir Edmund Hillary’s historic ascent of Mount Everest, Patch and Grape-Nuts are teaming up to highlight those who inspire people around them to climb their own mountains. If you were hitting the bars on the East Side of Milwaukee in the mid-1980s and early 1990s, you are probably fans of the BoDeans, the rock band from Waukesha. Sam Llanas and Kurt Neumann introduced the nation to the Waukesha Sound and made a name for themselves in the music industry. In 2012, Llanas decided to leave the band to work on solo projects and is facing one of those challenges right now – writing the score for a one-man play about alcoholism, bullying and suicide. “I'm working with a playwright, Doug …

Footbridge Removal to Cost $228,000

The Village Board approved a demolition contract that calls for the Bridge Lane Ravine footbridge to be removed no later than Oct. 15.

The removal of the Bridge Lane Ravine Footbrdige will cost $228,200, according to Fox Point Now. The Fox Point Village Board on Tuesday night entered into a $187,700 contract – about $150,000 less than anticipated – for the demolition and removal of the footbridge. Trustees signed a separate $40,500 contract with Ayres Associates to inspect the demolition process and prepare contract documents. Trustees Beverly Bell, F.R. Dengel and Christine Symchych voted against the contract with Ayres, according to NOW, because two contractors seemed unnecessary. Public Works Director Scott Brandmeier said Ayres is hired to make sure the work is done appropriately and to address any issues that may come up. The contractor, C.W. Purpero, plans to …
