$10K Art Collection Vandalized, Pieces Stolen

Fox Point police are investigating a theft of 10 watercolor paintings created by renowned local artist, Paul F. Hammersmith.

Police are searching for suspects after a Fox Point woman reported that a $10,000 art collection in her home was vandalized when someone tore out and stole 10 watercolors from a sketchbook crafted by a well-known artist.  She went to the Fox Point Police Department on Oct. 8, according to a police report, and told officers that sometime between the summer of 2011 and Sept. 10, 2012, 10 watercolor sketches were stolen. But these aren't just a casual art creation, these watercolors were painted by Paul F. Hammersmith, a renowned local artist who painted them during the late 1890s and 1900s. Hammersmith produced sketches and watercolors of many well-known locations in Southeastern Wisconsin like Donges Bay Beach, bridges in Cedarburg, …

I do feel bad for the homeowner, but is the homeowner potentially in any sort of financial distress? Seriously, of all the things one would steal and it would be watercolor prints. Who would know where they were to begin with, let alone their value and the significance of the artist? I hope it's not a replay of Season 2, Episode 4 of The Waltons.   more ›

Students Weld Recycled Metal Scraps Into Sculptures

Students in all Patricia Leeson's art classes at Nicolet are helping build two, approximately eight-foot tall, recycled metal sculptures with the help of professional sculptor, Paul Bobrowitz, Jr. of Colgate, WI.

A rusted, orange gear for the head, shattered CD's for the scales and half of a dozen metal clamps to create the tail, two Nicolet High School junior girls have nearly finished their dragon.  "We're a painting class, so we normally don't get to do this kind of stuff, but it's really fun because this is completely different," Natalie Muenster said.  Students in each of Patricia Leeson's five art classes at Nicolet High School, regardless of course title, are learning about recycling what some may call garbage into beautiful works of art.  "The goal for them is to learn to use recycled pieces to make art," Leeson said. "It's green and to problem solve using materials that are available as opposed to running out and buying something." And to …

Contrast With a Red Leaf

An illustration of human imperfection.

Editor's Note: This photo and artist statement was created by Molly Kazan for her Photo One class at Nicolet High School. My photo’s colors and textures contrast between broken pieces of a leaf and a full, bright blue sky. To me, the photo illustrates that nobody is perfect, and it is those imperfections that make people unique. You must look beyond the negative, broken pieces of life and reach for the positives. Hardships and struggles can be overcome if you believe and trust that things will get better.

A Color Collision

A hunt to try and find where the flowers start and end.

Editor's Note: This photo and artist statement was created by Bria Virgil for her Photo One class at Nicolet High School. Where do the flowers start? Where do the flowers end? Is it a bush of flowers or a bouquet? Those were the two questions that lead me to taking this picture. We were learning the elements of color and I noticed that this particular flower had contrasting colors according to the color wheel. Simultaneously, we were learning how to take a dynamic photo. When I came upon the flowers I really didn’t think about the elements and dynamics needed, I just let my camera flow.

Petunia in Bloom

A dynamic angle emphasizes remarkable beauty.

Editor's Note: This photo and artist statement was created by Amy Vanderhout for her Photo One class at Nicolet High School. This photo is meant to show the splendor of nature. The contrast between the petals and the center of the flower focuses the eye on the center, then leads the eye across the petals as if the flower is blooming. By using a dynamic angle, the flower occupies most of the photo, thus emphasizing its remarkable beauty.
