Clogged Sewer Line at Manageable Level, Work to Diagnose Cause Continues

Since Thursday morning, Bayside crews and contractors have pumped some 2 million gallons of excess water from a 600 foot stretch of sanitary sewer pipe, after a backup up at a West Brown Deer Road business.

After working through the night, late into Friday morning, Bayside village officials say they finally have a blocked West Brown Deer Road sewer line back to a manageable level. Since 7 a.m. on Thursday, Bayside crews and contractors have worked to remove excess water from the line, pumping some 2 million gallons of water out of 600 foot stretch of sanitary sewer pipe, Village Manager Andy Pederson said. Through the village's efforts, Pederson said it was able to avoid impacting 400 to 500 homes with basement backups. Bayside Garden Center wasn't so lucky, experiencing a backup on its property. Pederson said he wasn't privy to details on possible damage to the Brown Deer Road business.  With that said, Pederson said the village is still …

Be Prepared With The Tornado App

The American Red Cross has an app that puts everything you need to know about preparing for a tornado right at your fingertips, and also sounds an alarm when a tornado warning is issued for your location, even when the app is closed.

Get your family and home ready for tornado season with the official Tornado App from the American Red Cross. The app puts everything you need to know about preparing for a tornado right at your fingertips, and also sounds an alarm when a tornado warning is issued for your location, even when the app is closed. The Village tests its siren every Saturday at noon, and Milwaukee County tests every second Wednesday of the month.  However, as tornado season approaches, please be aware that sirens will not be tested if there is a severe weather warning in the area as not to confuse residents.

Trouble on Fairy Chasm

We have been very lucky that we have avoided any major incidents, especially involving our children who actively play in the area. Sadly, I think we are living on borrowed time.

Storm Causes No Accidents in Fox Point or Bayside

Snow totals were low along the lake so Thursday's winter storm caused little problem in Fox Point and Bayside.

People must drive pretty well in Fox Point. Despite the snow, Fox Point police told Patch they received zero reports of accidents related to the weather. In fact, said Officer Steve Grossmueller, the department has fielded no calls about anything related to the snow. “We have had no calls in any weather-related issues,” he said. “The snow wasn’t too terrible here. We had no accidents or trees down.” He attributed it in part to the Public Works Department.  “Our DPW is good at getting roads cleared and salted,” he said. In Bayside, it was similarly sleepy. Lt. Tom Henkel told Patch, “We didn’t have anything out of the ordinary, just a few accidents in the area. It was really not that big of a deal here.” Bayside’s Deputy Village Manager …

Bayside Middle School Students to Get More Math Instruction

Extra training will likely come at expense of electives, and a "flex period" is also being considered.

(Editor’s note: This story was posted originally at 11:45 a.m. Thursday. Superintendent Rachel Boechler pointed out a series of inaccuracies regarding the flex period and the article has been adjusted to reflect changes.) Bayside Middle School students are not receiving enough mathematics education to meet state recommendations, and this should be changed, even if that leaves less time in the school day for electives, the Fox Point-Bayside School Board decided Monday. The board approved plans to create a new middle school curricular program that would include extending the amount of time spent on mathematics instruction and building in a flex period for student support and extension. The particulars of how the extra time will be worked …

Bayside Village Taxes Dropping Just in Time for The Holidays

For second year in a row, village holds the line on property tax levy.

A typical Bayside homeowner should see a slight drop in village property taxes this year because of a zero-increase tax levy and a decline in property values. The Village Board approved a $9.2 million budget for 2013, which is a 4.8 percent decrease over last year's $9.7 million budget. Village Manager Andy Pederson attributes the decrease to negotiations with the police and Department of Public Works unions. "With the tools that we were given in the budget-repair bill, or Act 10, the non-represented employees were already paying their pensions," Pederson said. "When we had a 30-day window to negotiate with our unions, we negotiated a clause that they would contribute 67 percent of their portion of the retirement contribution portion in …
