UPDATED: 7-Car Accident on I-43 Backs Up Traffic for 7 Miles

Traffic was backed up to the Cedarburg exit at Highway C on Tuesday morning when seven cars collided on Interstate 43.

The North Shore Fire Department reported a seven-car crash around 7:26 a.m. Tuesday.  Traffic on Interstate-43 was brought to a crawl, but NSFD is reporting no injuries at this time.  By 8 a.m., a grey Hyundai was being loaded onto a tow truck just North of the Brown Deer Road exit, and multiple other vehicles waited in line to also be towed.  As of 8:10 a.m., traffic was still at a crawl heading south on I-43. Dozens of cars were getting off the freeway at the Mequon Road exit and backing up Port Washington Road heading south. Many were also driving down the emergency lane for more than one mile before the Mequon Road exit to inch toward the exit. NSFD reports that emergency units were cleared by 7:45 a.m. The Milwaukee County Sheriff's …

NSFD Honors Retiring 30-Year Veteran Firefighter

Heavy Equipment Operator Robert Lewis is a third-generation firefighter. He publicly thanked his parents and said he's most proud that his mother and father were still alive to see him retire.

The fire bell rings and all police officers and firefighters snap to attention, standing tall and stiff, hands at their sides, eyes locked forward. As the firetruck rolls in, the siren is let loose in honor of North Shore Fire Department's Heavy Equipment Operator Robert Lewis' retirement after more than 30 years as a firefighter.  Lewis is a third-generation firefighter with deep roots in Southeastern Wisconsin, beginning with his grandfather's time as a firefighter in Ixonia. Tuesday morning, dozens of Lewis' friends, family and co-workers attended a ceremony at NSFD Station 1 in Brown Deer.  An official fire department escort brought Lewis to the station. As he stepped off Engine 1, he was welcomed by an official color guard, other …

Bulging Pants Give Away Thief at Best Buy

This Mequon man thought he could stuff an 8-inch box in his pants and walk out with a set of $300 headphones. Little did he know loss prevention was watching him closely from the appliance aisle and Brown Deer police would be on the lookout for him.

A 22-year-old Mequon man thought he could sneak out of Best Buy with some video games jammed into his pants. Little did he know that loss prevention would notice the 8-inch bulge and find it a little unnatural.  According to the report: Fox Point police were called to Best Buy, 8755 N. Port Washington Rd., around 8 p.m. on Aug. 6 for a theft that had just occurred. While they were en route to the store, a Brown Deer officer found the getaway car in the 4100 block of West Brown Deer Road. They detained the driver and his 20-year-old friend from Oak Creek until all the information could be gathered.  Meanwhile, a Fox Point officer went to Best Buy and spoke with a loss prevention officer. He said his manager saw two men acting suspiciously, …

Proposed NSFD Fee Schedule Rankles Fox Point Trustees

A village trustee says Fox Point is contributing more than it should to the shared fire department, and the board declined to approved the new proposed fee schedule, asking instead for re-examination and a sunset clause.

Editor's Note: This article has been updated to reflect a correction in the numbers for Fox Point's 2012 contributions.  While four of the seven communities served by the North Shore Fire Department have adopted freezing the fee contributions, Fox Point Village Board members are looking for relief and a three-year sunset clause on the new schedule. "Compared to the original formula, it seems Fox Point is giving up more than the other communities are," trustee F.R. Dengel said Tuesday. "It seems like we're being asked to pay for more than our fair share." Fox Point paid 10.38 percent ($1.2 million) of NSFD's costs in 2012; the proposed formula has the village paying 10.31 percent. Village President Michael West said the Village Board will …

Thanks for the comment, Adam. At this point, I'm not sure. They didn't discuss that in detail at the meeting. The majority of the conversation was spent deciding if a five or three-year sunset would be appropriate. However, I have asked to receive a copy of their formal letter they will send to the Fire board and that should outline their reasons. I'll be sure to post that information as soon as …   more ›

Fox Point Fight Leaves Glendale Man with Stitches

But the 21-year-old victim didn't report the crime until June 13, when he stopped by the Fox Point Police Department and told police that he was punched so hard in the head that he needed three stitches. When officers asked why he was reporting it a month later, he said he initially was worried about retaliation. However, after he received a $1,300 hospital bill, he decided that he wanted the two men who assaulted him to pay for it. According to police reports: The man said he and his …

Brown Deer Joins Consolidated Dispatch

All seven municipalities in NSFD now also members of consolidated dispatch.

The final piece in a major change to the North Shore police departments is in place. On Monday night, the Brown Deer Village Board authorized Village Attorney John Fuchs to negotiate a contract with Bayside for consolidating their dispatch centers, according to an article by BrownDeerNOW. It's been greater than a two-year debate among Bayside, Brown Deer, Fox Point, River Hills, Shorewood, Whitefish Bay and Glendale. The same seven communities are members of the North Shore Fire Department. The report says that with Brown Deer now joining the consolidation effort, Bayside will begin seeking bids for an addition to Village Hall for the new center, planned to open in 2012. It will replace the dispatch centers in Brown Deer and Whitefish Bay …
