Super Bug or Norovirus Rampant in US, Symptoms Present Within 48 Hours of Exposure

As flu season wanes a new Super Bug from Australia is taking its place in the spotlight.

A new strain of the highly contagious norovirus has reached the U.S. from Australia. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that the new norovirus, named GII.4 Sydney because it's believed to have started in Sydney, Australia, is currently the leading cause of norovirus outbreaks in the U.S. In the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report released Jan. 25, the norovirus is described as: the leading cause of epidemic gastroenteritis, including foodborne outbreaks, in the U.S. Hospitalization and mortality associated with norovirus infection occur most frequently among elderly persons, young children, and immunocompromised patients. Hot water with lots of honey and lemon really sooths the throat and makes one feel better. Also at the onset I spray my mouth with Z-cam and take multi cold tab and if taken right away for a couple days, there are times it never gets worse, but if I wait until I am really sick then take meds it takes longer to rid myself of flu or bad colds as well.   more ›

Flu Cases in North Shore Not an Epidemic, Yet

North Shore Health Department says this flu season, so far, is a "typical year."

As tweets about #theflu continue to fly across the Twittersphere and more posts about drippy noses and high fevers fill up Facebook, North Shore familes aren't exempt from the burdensome bug.  "Went to bed Dec. 30 not feeling right, didn't get back up until the following Thursday," Katie Millar Bucholtz of Fox Point said on Facebook. "I missed Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, front row courtside to the Globetrotters and a week of work. I was so sick I don't even remember being sick. Didn't get the flu shot. It was horrible and I'm glad it's over, although I still have a cough." Roughly 66 Percent of State Residents Wash Hands After Using the Bathroom

The survey also found that state residents prefer to use a gas station for relief when on the road.

Roughly 1 in 3 handshakes are done with a person who may not have washed their hands according to a survey released Thursday by Menomonee Falls-based Bradley Corp. The survey queried state residents on how often they wash their hands after using a public restroom. A total of 66 percent said they always wash up, 29 percent said usually or about half the time, and 4 percent said they usually don’t or never do. The online survey of 301 Wisconsin adults was conducted August 1-3. But eyewitness accounts seem to show that there could be more unwashed hands out there.   When asked about others’ hand washing actions in public restrooms, 77 percent of Wisconsinites said they frequently or occasionally see people leave without washing their hands. …
