In the flurry of holiday shopping and parties, the rush to complete end-of-year business, we are also reminded that this is the season to remember those less fortunate than ourselves. Year-end fundraising appeal letters arrive by mail and e-mail from those to whom we have given before, encouraging renewed giving – a task many people set aside for the week after Christmas, when things have slowed down. Yet there are many for whom the holidays could be considerably brightened by some giving right now – families that might face hunger rather than a feast, children whose stockings could be empty of toys, people whose very lives and livelihoods have been visited by illness or disaster beyond their control. And there is still time. With …

Eight-year-old Audrey Parrott and her family will face numerous hurdles over her next two years of her cancer treatment and ever-deepening financial frustrations.
Just three weeks ago, Fox Point third-grader Audrey Parrott was diagnosed with leukemia. And while she spends most of her time at Children's Hospital, preparing herself for the expected hair loss that accompanies chemotherapy, her family and friends in the Fox Point-Bayside area are banding together to bring a smile to Audrey's face and help support her family financially. On Oct. 4, Audrey and her parents went to the hospital to have her blood tested for an infection. When the results came back, they learned their little girl had developed Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. "When we were told that our 8-year-old child had cancer, our whole world stopped and changed forever," Audrey's mother, Mary Jo Parrott, said. Fortunately, ALL …

Hailey Roser, 4, of Mukwonago, was allowed to leave the hospital despite the lockdown.
Updated, 5:05 p.m. Sunday: Hailey Roser, 4, has met Justin Bieber. Despite Children's Hospital being on lockdown because of the Brookfield mass shooting, she was allowed to leave the hospital and she met Bieber Sunday afternoon. "Dreams come true," tweeted her family from the account @HealingHailey. A Waukesha Patch Twitter follower told Patch that Hailey's ambulance arrived in Milwaukee for Bieber's concert. "I am here with my daughters and the ambo with Hailey got here about 15 min ago," tweeted @brianokeefemke. A social media campaign was launched last week to encourage Bieber to meet the 4-year-old girl, who is hospitalized in Wauwatosa. A local radio station had provided Hailey with tickets for a meet-and-greet show, according to the …

Air medical transport service hasn't had an accident in its 27 years.
There is a practice at St. Jude the Apostle School in Wauwatosa, which is near the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center. Whenever anyone hears the distinctive sound of a low-flying, twin-turbine helicopter approaching, lessons stop, and students and faculty alike bow their heads and pray. Their prayers go to the person being carried by a Flight for Life aircraft to Froedtert or Children's hospitals, because they know that anyone on such a flight is critically ill or injured. But they also give a thought to the air and medical crew onboard. For 27 years, Flight for Life has been providing emergency medical transport services to the Medical Center and other regional hospitals. The service will likely mark a milestone this month: It is within a …
