Freshmen's Art Brought to Life at Nicolet After Her Passing

Students make dresses based on designs by Laura Miller, who died from a brain tumor in 2009.

Holding hands and tearfully watching speeches by Laura Miller's mother and father, dozens of Nicolet High School students, faculty and staff gathered at Nicolet on Monday to remember the freshman who passed away from a brain tumor nearly three years ago. "She had a personality that transcended different groups. She was just well liked by lots and lots of kids. It really affected the entire school," Principal Greg DePue said. Laura Miller was only 14 years old when she passed. Her mother, Susan Miller, said she was in class on Tuesday and by Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, was in intensive care. "It was that quick," she said. Nicolet Students and Faculty Remember 'Glazzy'

Students and faculty gathered in the Nicolet library for the unveiling of "Kindred Spirits," a print of a famous painting loved by Lon Glaznap, or "Glazzy" as many knew him before he passed in September. Kathleen Kean, U.S. history teacher, organized the dedication. Kean taught in conjunction with Glaznap during his more than 25 years at Nicolet. "His enthusiasm for learning, his spontaniety of creating projects together. I miss that he could see things about the students I couldn't," Kean said. Glaznap's connection with students was so strong that many even came to the dedication. One student recalled a Thanksgiving feast that Glaznap organized to commemorate the pilgrims.
