I-43 Southbound Traffic Backed Up From Brown Deer Road

Things are looking pretty ugly out there with the traffic backed up along I-43 southbound and I-94 southbound and westbound. The DOT is reporting delays as much as a half hour.

If you drive home using I-43 southbound to downtown, or are using I-94 southbound going out of Milwaukee, then you might want to consider taking a different route home. The delays, which are expected to last through 6 p.m., are due to long-term lane closures and Friday rush hour traffic. Neither Patch nor our media partners at WISN 12 have heard of any major incidents. Here are the areas affected and the travel times, according to the state Department of Transportation.

What would you call I-94 where its general direction is SE/NW? It may be just as well if you go back to the old stand-by "Go that way past the Johnson place and turn where we had the wheat field". The Johnsons haven't lived there since '63 and we haven't farmed since the plow horse died, but we all know what you are talking about.   more ›

Future I-43 Possibilities Unveiled at Public Meeting

The DOT sought local advice in how to improve I-43, and what concerns residents have about adding lanes and modifying interchanges between Bender Road and Highway 60.

The bumper-to-bumper I-43 commuter traffic between Silver Spring Drive and Good Hope Road is only going to get more congested as the North Shore continues to grow. The high traffic volume on that stretch of the interstate already causes concerns for Department of Transportation officials, and they expect that congested commuter traffic to spread north to Brown Deer Road over the next 30 years unless improvements are made. At a public meeting at Nicolet High School Wednesday night, the DOT presented a number of possibilities to improve the I-43 corridor between Bender Road and Highway 60 in Grafton. The DOT is conducting environmental testing right now, and held the public information meeting to get resident feedback before conducting …

Nicolet Students, Neighbors and Faculty Support Replacing Tunnel With Footbridge

Plans for I-43 are being built by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Nicolet High School neighbors support replacing the tunnel to auxiliary sports fields with an overpass footbridge, while others also want a sound barrier.

Nicolet High School neighbors support replacing the tunnel between the school and soccer fields with a pedestrian footbridge in sync with proposed I-43 corridor reconstruction, and also want protection from the noise associated with increasing traffic. "Were finding out what the community wants, what the needs are, desires are, challenges are. We're really in an informational-gathering stage," said Michael Pyritz, spokesman for the Department of Transportation.  "The high school is very interested in going with a pedestrian bridge up and over (I-43) which when it rains heavily, it turns itself into a waterway. That’s a great example of how the DOT is working with local interests to identify what the concerns and challenges are," Pyritz …

Beware: Darting Deer Cause Most Crashes in June

Fox Point and Bayside have hot spots for deer activity, but this month ranks as one of the worst for crashes involving the darting animals. So here's some tips from the Department of Transportation to help you avoid a costly collision.

Although motor vehicle collisions with deer peak in the fall months, June is one of the worst months for driver and passenger injuries due to deer crashes. In four of the last five years, June ranked as the worst or second worst month for motorists’ injuries from deer crashes, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT).   Motorists and deer are both plentiful this time of year, and all too often they meet on Wisconsin roadways with damaging consequences. Deer activity increases this time of year as does look for places to give birth and young deer separate from their mothers. With this increased activity, drivers may encounter more deer darting into the paths of their vehicles without warning. Locally, Fox Point and …

Born to Ride: May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

The Wisconsin Motorcycle Safety Program is celebrating its 30th year and reminding motorists to be careful on the road.

Just last week, a motorcycle driver was killed on North Port Washington Road right outside of Bayshore Mall. Every year, more than 100 motorcyclists are killed and another 2,500 are injured in accidents, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.  And as the temperatures climb, so do the number of motorcycles on the roads — which is why the DOT is reminding drivers to be cautions during Motorcycle Safety Awareness month in May. According to a press release from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation: More than 500,000 Wisconsin residents have motorcycle licenses or permits and more than 300,000 motorcycles are registered in the state.   "During May, which is national Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, we’re reminding …

Traffic Map: Wet and Snow Covered Roads Slow Friday Commute

Check our interactive Patch traffic map for road conditions before heading out.

A less-than-white holiday season made for mixed emotions in Fox Point and Bayside. However, today is a day for the snow lovers as the white, fluffy stuff has arrived and "Mount Bayside" is open for business. According to the alert from the National Weather Service, a "potential for significant snowfall across southern Wisconsin" exists as an approaching low pressure system is expected to intensify as it moves across the area Friday afternoon and evening. While there aren't a ton of places to go sledding in the North Shore, a few local hot spots are "Mount Bayside," at Bayside Village Hall just north of the police department, and there's plenty of room for snow forts and snowball fights at Ellsworth Park. "Parking is available in the yard …

Starting Wednesday, the westbound portion of the airport spur will be closed to traffic. Eastbound (into the airport) will still be open.

From the Wisconsin Department of Transportation: The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) will fully close the Airport Spur (WIS 119) westbound leaving the Airport for reconstruction beginning at 6 a.m. on February 20, 2012 through late 2012. “Motorists leaving the Airport will be detoured to Howell Avenue, said Ryan Luck, WisDOT construction chief. “The Airport Spur eastbound into the Airport remains open.”  Traffic exiting General Mitchell Airport should utilize the following detour route information: From General Mitchell International Airport to I-43/94 NB (to Downtown Milwaukee):  From General Mitchell International Airport to I-94 EAST (SB) (to Racine/Kenosha/Chicago):  General Mitchell International Airport to I-43/894 WB…

Again? The WisDOT bozo's just don't get it. Repeatedly screwing up the access to an international airport that just angers the average citizen. Ever try to follow their detour signage, especially at night? I swear they have a grade schooler and a crayon laying it out. Or maybe the municipal engineers in the surrounding area are just that incompetent too. Call, write or email Dewayne Johnson, the …   more ›

WisDOT to Install New Lighting in Marquette Interchange; Lane Closure Expected This Week

The 'digital chevron' system installed will be a first in the state.

Commuters, take note: The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) will implement a new technology in the Marquette Interchange from the I-94 eastbound ramp to northbound I-43 in starting July 12. The installation will close the right lane on I-94 eastbound between the 13th Street exit and the connector ramp to I-43 northbound from July 12-15 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. While travel times may be longer, John Oimoen, manager with WisDOT, said the operation will ultimately improve operations and safety on our transportation network.” He also said “a new dynamic chevron system is a cost-effective way to help motorists stay alert and monitor their speeds in this area.” This system is the first of its kind in Wisconsin and WisDOT said benefits…

Darting Deer More Frequent in June

DOT says June is a bad month for deer and vehicle collisions.

State transportation officials are urging motorists to be on the lookout for roaming deer when they hit the roads this month. During June, deer are looking for places to give birth and young deer separate from their mothers. As a result, drivers may encounter more deer darting into the paths of their vehicles without warning, the DOT says. Although motor vehicle collisions with deer peak in the fall, June is one of the worst months for driver and passenger injuries due to vehicle collisions with deer. In four of the last five years, June ranked as the worst or second worst month for motorists injured from deer crashes, said the DOT's Randy Romanski. “Of course, the best way to prevent injuries is to avoid crashes by driving cautiously and …

Walker Revs Up Wisconsin for Motorcycle Season

Soaring gas prices drive more motorists to switch to bikes.

Gov. Scott Walker has designated May as Motorcycle Awareness and Safety Month in Wisconsin. "Motorcyclists have the right by law to the safe enjoyment of their vehicles, including the full and equal use of the roadway without encroachment by other vehicles whether it be on city streets or rural and urban highways," Walker said in his proclomation. Motorcycles are increasingly being used for basic transportation as well as recreation because of soaring gas prices. More than 491,000 Wisconsin residents have motorcycle licenses or permits and more than 333,000 motorcycles are registered in the state, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. "With the 2011 riding season now underway in Wisconsin, motorcycles are rapidly …
