Fire Destroys Deck at White Oaks Apartments

The North Shore Fire Department and Bayside Police are still investigating the cause of a fire that destroyed a deck and forced firefighters to tear down a wall at White Oaks Apartments on Sunday.

A heavy smoke smell billowed out from underneath the overhang at the 9100 building at White Oak Apartments Sunday, and law enforcement are still working to determine what started the fire.  A White Oaks resident of another unit called 911 to report a fire around 4 p.m. Sunday. She said she was in the parking structure beneath the building and noticed thick smoke throughout the entire garage, but no flames. When Bayside police arrived, an officer approached the front door and said in his report that he could smell burning wood in the air under the front canopy, but no alarms were sounding.  Two police officers were extinguishing a small fire contained to an apartment patio with a balcony near apartments 112 and 113. Fire Destroys Bayside Home; Everyone Escapes Safely

At least six area fire departments and four local police departments assisted in putting out a fire that completely consumed a home in the 9000 block of Rexleigh Drive.

A Bayside home was destroyed in a Thursday afternoon fire that took at least six fire departments more than three hours to bring under control. Nobody was injured in the blaze, which broke out around 1 p.m. in the single-story home at 9141 N. Rexleigh Drive, near Ellsworth Park and Bayside Village Hall. The North Shore Fire Department initially responded after the homeowner called 911 after she heard crackling, and got out of the house. The smoke from the blaze was visible from far beyond the borders of Bayside and forced police to block off at least four arterial streets through the village, including Regent Road, Ellsworth Lane, Fairy Chasm Road and Rexleigh Drive. At 3 p.m., the fire had been reduced to what North Shore Fire Department …

Excuse me you jerk but that was my family's home. I'd like you to spend one hour with my mother and I while we try to even begin to list the irreplaceable items that have been lost. Yes insurance will replace some furniture and dishes but not the loss of heirlooms, pictures, records and our entire family's sense of security. I truly hope the karma gods give you what you have coming. I've never …   more ›

Fox Point-Bayside Patch Year in Review

The Best of Patch: July

A look back at the top headlines from Fox Point-Bayside Patch in 2011.

At year's end it's nice to take a look back at where you came, which offers a good look at where you're going. At Patch, July brought a Naval helicopter landing in Ellsworth Park, a fire that destroyed a PAC office, weed hidden in a pair of shoes and the affects of the smoking ban in Fox Point. UPDATE: Helicopter Departs After Making Unexpected Landing in Bayside A U.S. Navy chopper made a precautionary landing because of mechanical problems and left residents nearby wondering what was going on early that summer morning.  "I heard it over head and it sounded kind of loud," said Chris Konnor, whose yard overlooks Ellsworth Park. "Maybe a little abnormal. I was a little scared it was going to fall out of the sky. It was very low." Fire …

A new Bayside restaurant will remain closed until after Thanksgiving following an early-morning kitchen fire on Wednesday. Around 6 a.m., Bayside police responded to a burglar alarm at Pho Hai Tuyet II and saw a fire in the back by the kitchen. North Shore Fire Department Batallion Chief Pete Basulacchi said firefighters broke the front door to get into the restaurant and found a large soup pot in the kitchen that was burning on the stove. "It was aluminum, and the actual pan had broke and melted it got that hot," Busalacchi said. "There was no actual fire to extinguish, but there was smoke so we opened the doors and ventilated."
