NFSD Report: Is Your Carbon Monoxide Detector Working?

Firefighters investigate four homes where the detectors were going off, but found no levels of the gas.

The North Shore Fire Department investigated four instances of carbon monoxide detectors activating in late November, but none reflected any presence of the deadly gas. I would strongly suggest that homeowners also test their alarm sensors are working. Replacing the battery or testing the battery won't tell you if your CO gas sensor is working. To be safe, you need to be sure that your alarm unit is live, AND sensing gas. NSFD Veteran Retires after 30 Years

Battalion Chief Jeff Weigand was instrumental in fire department consolidation and a well-respected leader.

After 30 years of protecting North Shore communities — first in Fox Point and then as a member of the North Shore Fire Department  — Battalion Chief Jeff Weigand is retiring. As a battalion chief, Weigand oversaw firefighters at five different stations within the NSFD. Chief Robert Whitaker said Weigand didn't just do his job – he excelled. “He was a great emergency scene manager and was able to quickly process information and think on his feet,” Whitaker said, adding that Weigand wasn’t the kind of supervisor to shy away from difficult issues either, and preferred to challenge them head-on. “Jeff worked great with others and was always willing to talk about issues and discuss them.” While his official last day will be Sept. 9, Weigand, 53…

The North Shore Fire Department’s Residential Knox Box Program

Local program provides emergency access and reassurance to North Shore residents.

In the event of a fire or medical emergency in which a resident is unable to open their door to allow emergency personnel entry, the Knox box is accessed allowing emergency personnel quick access to the patient in order to render needed care.   If a Knox box were not present in this type of situation, it may be necessary for emergency personnel to force the door or window in order to gain access to the patient.  Forced entry is performed according to the urgency of the situation and in the most cost effective manner possible. Repairs can be costly to the resident and can result in the need for replacement of the door/window in some cases. We are finding residents who are experiencing frequent falls, are disabled, are part of a pendant or …

Space Heaters Are Warm, But Can Be Dangerous

The North Shore Fire Department reminds everyone to be careful with your space heaters during the cold months of winter.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) consumers are not using care when purchasing and using space heaters. Approximately 21,800 residential fires are caused by space heaters a year and 300 people die in these fires. If you have a space heater, please review the listed safety tips and do your part in helping to reduce fires and deaths caused by space heaters.  Should you have questions regarding space heater safety or other safety topics, please contact the North Shore Fire Department Public Education Office at 414-228-0292, jglanz@nsfire.org, or visit our website at www.nsfire.org
