Friends Remember Huegel as Cornerstone of Community

Stalwart Glendale citizen helped build Nicolet tradition from its beginning.

Each August, the Nicolet School Board convenes its annual meeting where the taxpaying public takes over the district’s business of approving budgets and plans for the coming year. Occasionally, the members of the board are obliged to listen while the public speaks. And the public is obliged to elect a chairman to run the meeting. For about two decades, the only candidate ever to take the chair was Bill Huegel. “I don’t think there was ever another name,” long-time board member Marilyn Franklin said. “It was, ‘I nominate Bill Huegel,’ then ‘All in favor, say aye.’” Last year, in an unfortunate twist of fate, the late July flood forced the postponement of the annual meeting, which Huegel was again expected to chair, and at which he was to be…

Nicolet Still Waiting for Insurance Company to Pay Flood Bills

Some contractors refusing to finish work because they haven't been paid.

Six months after Nicolet High School was severely damaged in flooding that hit much of southeastern Wisconsin, the district is still negotiating with its insurer over more than $2 million in claims that have been submitted, but not yet paid. Because all the bills haven't been paid for the cleanup and renovation of the school, some contractors are refusing to finish up work until they get their checks, school officials say. "Rooms and doors aren't finished because they're not getting paid," said Brian Reiels, the district's director of facility services. So far, the district has received bills totaling $11.9 million from contractors who have worked to get the high school back in shape from the July floods. The district has received $9.6 …
