Green Tree Road Slated to Fully Reopen Within Weeks

Director of Public Works Scott Brandmeier said they only ran into a small hitch with a water main during the installation of the new footpath running along Green Tree Road.

After weeks of following bright orange "detour" signs, residents will soon be able to utilize Green Tree Road again — and not just for east-west driving passage, but also the newly constructed pedestrian footpath. Scott Brandmeier, director of public works, said both Green Tree Road and the new footpath are now open for resident use and will only be intermittently closed for the next few weeks as construction crews finish the shoulder and landscaping. "There will be periodic closures starting sometime this week. We're anticipating that some of that work will start maybe on Wednesday," Brandmeier said.  All work is scheduled to be completed within the next few weeks. He said paving was finished last Tuesday and now the road just needed time…

Given the scope of the project, that $40k is about 4.4%. An overrun of less than 5% doesn't seem all that far out of line, and I might even agree that 'very reasonable' is a fair statement to describe it.   more ›

The project includes replacing parts of the storm sewer and water main, and constructing a pedestrian path.

In an effort to improve Green Tree Road, the village is pumping more than $850,000 into a comprehensive project that will replace parts of the storm sewer and water main, reconstruct the road, and add a pedestrian path. The work will be done by Reeseman's Excavating & Grading from Burlington, and the money will be spent as follows: An additional $9,750 is allocated to replace the pedestrian path between Quarles Place and Links Way. Public Works Director Scott Brandmeier said he believes Glendale will make an adjoining path. Village board members also had to decide Tuesday whether to take the opportunity to widen the sewer pipes under Green Tree Road as a means of alleviating flooding in the area. "I thought I’d be remiss not discussing …

Fox Point-Bayside Patch Year in Review

The Best of Patch: December

A look back at the top headlines from Fox Point-Bayside Patch in 2011.

At year's end it's nice to take a look back at where you came, which offers a good look at where you're going. At Patch, December brought many stories of giving back, a new footpath for Fox Point residents and some heartfelt letters to Santa Claus. Take a look at what made December a month to remember at Patch. Jewish Santa Crosses the Cultural Divide "There's nothing like being Santa Claus in full Santa Claus garb, driving down the highway and having cars pulling up next to you just looking," Mark Shapiro said. For the third year in a row, Mark, executive director of the Jewish Community Center, will dress up as Santa and deliver hundreds of toys the Shapiro family have collected throughout the year to children at the Cathedral Center, an…

Fox Point Gets Footpath on Green Tree Road

New footpath will cost $78,000, but offer safe passage for pedestrians from speeding vehicles.

Tom Clark said when his kids were little, he wouldn't let them walk down Green Tree Road because traffic would go by so quickly. Janice Pfaffl said in the summer, she and her children would have to walk through the debris in the ditch because speeding cars making walking along the shoulder unsafe. However, these residents will soon have safer passage along Green Tree Road with a new footpath. "That's great news if you ask me. It's about time the village made it safe for pedestrians to get around. Now they need a footpath on Calumet, Bradley and Dean," resident Rachael Herrenbruck said in a Facebook post. The new, 2,400-foot path will cost $78,056 and begin at the Fox Point/Glendale border, stretching down to Lake Drive on the north side of…

Fox Point Residents Against Green Tree Road Rehab

Village manager says federal requirements cost more than federal grant.

Fox Point officials got an earful from residents Tuesday night when the board discussed rehabbing Green Tree Road. "We are opposed to any widening of Green Tree Road," Tom Clark, a resident on Green Tree Road said. "Widening the road, I feel, would only increase the speed of that traffic." As part of capital improvement projects, the village was looking at utilizing federal grant money to rehabilitate Green Tree Road. However, there's a catch - the village would have to upgrade the road to meet the Federal Highway Administration's standards, and foot the bill of hiring an additional consultant to oversee their own consultant. Those standards include things like widening the road and adding bicycle and pedestrian lanes. "The state requires …

Drunk Driver Asks Cop to Turn Off The Recorder

Twelve-year Fox Point resident lost in village because of too many "U" streets.

One woman's attempt to appeal to an officer's charitable side didn't work out real well. On June 12, just before 1 a.m., a Fox Point police officer noticed a vehicle entering the intersection at North Santa Monica Boulevard and Green Tree Road, its blinker signaling a left turn. But just partially into the turn, the 45-year-old Fox Point woman changed her mind and abruptly turned back onto Green Tree Road, continuing east. The report says that the officer followed her as she approached a dead end, and watched as she came to a complete stop, then backing up into a brick and mortar wall. After striking the wall, the vehicle stopped and began to travel forward then reverse, conducting a Y-turn. Fox Point police then pulled the driver over. As…

I-43 Bridge Construction Update

$12.5 million projects forces some temporary, single-lane closures.

The Department of Transportation has issued updates on the bridge constructions in Fox Point and Bayside that leaves numerous blaze orange cones scattered along the roadway and tends to slow traffic. Three bridges that cross Interstate 43 including Green Tree Road, Good Hope Road and Brown Deer Road, have been worked on since the beginning of April and according to a press release by the DOT, have cost $12.5 to update. The Good Hope and Brown Deer bridges have been completely replaced, totaling roughly 1,500 feet of reconstruction. The Green Tree bridge only required a new epoxy overlay. Previously, there was only a metal median along I-43, but this has been replaced with a concrete barrier wall. New lighting was installed at both the Good…
